More and more times, i read about rare/scarce cars being scrapped because the owner has given up on them.
Whats the score with this, surely its better to pass it on to another enthusuast to finish ?
One less every day etc....

It is sad, but sometimes a car really can be beyond saving. As long as the usable bits are saved and the car really is beyond economic repair (not just that curse word that insurance companies tell you) Then i guess its not so bad. Kinda like one car giving its life so that others can live on ;D.

A lot of people don't seem to realise that no matter how bad the condition of a car someone will want it. But saying that when Tonycocacola tried to sell his e28 520i on ebay there where no takers at all and ended up having to scrap it.
Plus I don't know about other areas but round here there are lot of people started either free disposal or paying for away from peoples houses. Mainly due to scrap prices. Four times this year I have had notes pushed through my letter boxes offering to take my "scrap cars" away. Cheeky b*stards. ;DSaying that could have been worse they could have started dropping them off here ;D ;D

It is a shame, but I'm with Rev. Deluxe on this - sometimes it's just not economical to restore. OK so if there's only 12 in the entire country left then I think pretty much anything is restorable, but a rusted-to-curse word Mk5 Cortina for example wouldn't be much good except for parts - it's easier to start with a decent shell . Just my tuppence worth.

I get that a lot, plus travellers turning up on the doorstep giving it the old "ello dere mate, d'ya want me to be taking dat old cortina away for ya?" "Yes, of course you can my good man, that'll be a thousand of your finest english pound please" Tossers.

Everytime I patch up a bit of rot I seem to uncover a load more and I'm starting to think if its really worth all the grief when theres still so many of them about. I might as well break it and go out and buy a half decent one.

It's a harsh decision to make - my brother had the same problem with his Rover P6. Masses of welding to do, loads of other jobs, then you see them in the paper with t&t for a couple of hundred . That was awful breaking that car though - really didn't like doing it.

Some times cars have to give up there life to help others.
It is a shame to see rare cars scrapped but what can you do if no one wants to restore it? I suppose in a way this is similar to the banger racing debate.

Sometimes it can come down to personal reasons, there's a guy on the BuySellCortina site who wants his car scrapped because he and his dad were restoring it together and his dad died. He feels that he could not face seeing the car on the road again driven by someone else and he hasn't the time to restore it himself.
More ususally it is a financial issue. Take the Mk3 Cortina that I just bought. Only owned by one family (Father, Mother, Son) but needs a little bit of work done on it (Sills, rear arch, two new wings). I know that if I broke the car I would make far more than if I do the work and sell it as a complete car. It is also alot easier to break a car than to mess about restoring one. You should all know by now that it's easier to take things apart rather than put them back together again ;D.
I reckon that once the car is done I'll sell it for a grand - if I'm lucky - more likely #750. I'll have probably spent about 300quid in time and parts doing it (if I'm lucky), more likely 500quid. If I was to break it now I'd get about 150 for the interior, 100 for the engine, 50quid for the suspension, 40quid clocks and dash, 40 brakes, 30 quid wheels, 40 quid glass, 40quid door handles, 30 quid shell for scrap (or perhaps up to150-200 to a banger racer if I didn't sell the suspension) and (if I was inclined) 50quid for the paperwork, vin plates etc. Quick profit, no hassle, no work. And this is before I even start to mention the new spares that I got with the vehicle. Financially it makes alot more sense for me to break the vehicle.
Fortunately I'm not just driven by filthy lucre. I'll look to get it up to a decent standard with MOT and tax and make a small profit (hopefully) when I sell it on to another Cortina enthusiast.
And this is on a Mk 3 cortina! When you get to really rare cars it is usually even more profitable to break them. Just look at ebay prices for anything with Lotus written on it!

Been in that situation myself. The MK1 escort I had was far too gone for my mine or anyone elses welding skills, FUBAR, so I broke it for spares, broke my heart at the same time. However, the 1275GT that I'm restoring is pretty FUBAR too, but I've had it so long that I can't bare to part with it. Ally the performance parts would probably fetch more than I paid for it but it's too cool
