...it's very popular to transplant modern 16v lumps into older cars (I've got one in mine ;D ), but which is the best lump and why? Thought it might make an interesting topic.
The Vauxhall/Opel is a popular choice, as is the Zetec, and the Toyota (4-AGE? Can't remember). But you don't see many VW 16v lumps in non-VWs. Why? Some particular design flaw? No tuning bits?
If you were transplanting one of the above into a retro car, which would you go for and why? Any other popular engines that I've forgotten?

The ubiquitous K-Series has been done to death... I'd use the Integrale lump *n

You have to keep it in the family! I saw a Mk1 golf with a Vauxhall XE 16v in once, but for me the point is to create something that the manufacturer would/could have created. Hence 16v Golf Mk 1’s, XE-powered chevettes, MX-5 powered Mazda 929 coupés are where its at for me. Not so sure about cross-pollination. Saying that Subaru-powered beetles seem logical enough.

Another popular one is the Peugeot 405 Mi16 into a 205.

isn't the golf 16v quite a "tall" engine, making it hard to fit in other stuff without major surgery?
maybe the cost factor too?

In france apparently you can get a 405 16V turbo 4wd, that must be some weapon. I've never seen one like.

I know what you mean about "cross-pollination"... There are plenty of XE-engined Mk2 Escorts, I posted pics of a Toyota-engined RWD Fiesta a couple of weeks back so it doesn't bother everyone I guess

I'm all for cross-pollination, as Darren so succinctly put it.
Not a fan of the usual 'put a Rover V8 in it, mate...' conversion though.
The Golf block is quite tall, yes...good for boring/stroking though.

I'd like to stick a 2.0 Twinspark Alfa Romeo engine in a Fiat Panda. That'd be fun! OR, for an easy transplant, a V6 from an Alfa 155 into a Fiat Tipo - they're pretty much the same car. But then, who the f*ck wants a Tipo?! (OK.... apart from us lot in ten years time!)

the fiat twincam/ lada swap is popular.apparently for it ease. there used to be a beetle in rallycross that ran a type 4(i think) motor with subaru quad cam heads. it gave the escort cossies and will gollops' pug a good run for their money. ;D

Cross pollination is old hat with minis, there's been so many different engines shoved into that tiny engine bay from rover V8s to numerous different J 16v lumps, an 1850 Maxi lump, a 1.9 pug GTI lump. If someones thought of it, it's probably been done or at least tried

Personally I don't mind a bit of cross pollination and I no quite a few people with good examples. My brother-in-laws 4age powered avenger being a good example. With my MK1 escort at the minute I inntend to fit a 2.0 zetec when I start the rebuild. The project I have wanted to do for a few years now invloves a Daihatsu Charmant and a 4age ;D but it looks like all the charmants have vanished off the face of the earth

phoenix have you got any pics of that Avenger, sounds awsome? As for cross polination (which from now will be a new technical term) i think there a certain rules, X flows and Pintos in chevettes for exmple is wrong but for me thats due to rally rivalry, in a funny way its a bit like saying "ok chevettes are rubbish better get ford power" or am i sad? some swaps are like a forced evolutution like a K series in an imp or a mini and Subaru engines in beetles. id Like to see Mi16 engines in RWD applications as they are the best engine out of the 2l (xe, Zetec ect) lot.

That can be done ‘easily’ apparently as LDV vans made a production bellhousing to attach the 1.9 PSA diesel engine to the ‘77mm’ Rover/TR7 box. SO you could use that box and bellhousing to create a RWD Mi16-powered machine if you felt so inclined.

There was a Chevette at the NZ South Island 4 & Rota Nats with an FJ20ET in it, probably would have been right up your alley there racer86

The way I see it is that you pick the best tool for the job. So if a CA18DET or 4AGE engine are whats gonna be best in your car (whatever the make) then so be it. If you need stupid ammounts of torque, then bung in a V8. Once you've taken the old engine out with the intention of replacing it with another engine you are already deviating from stock, so why limit yourself?
You may have limiting factors, like engine bay space and parts availability, but if your going to do something like re-engine your car, then you might as well push it as far as it will go (for your chosen application).
So whats the best power to weight ratio 4 pot engine around?

Probably a bike unit. 6speed sequential on there too - around 130bhp from NotVeryMuchKg.
