just read this on my bt news page. in theory at £1.34 per mile it could cost me £335 to get to work a week. are these people for real?

I quite like this scheme. Most of the "commuting" miles I do are at stupid o'clock when there's no one about. So it would cost me bo diddly.
Of course it's completely unfeasable and impractical.

That's just bloody ridiculous. At this rate, with a stupid law being passed every time the outcry at the last stupid law dies down, either we're all going to emigrate, or we're going to get even more fed up than we already are, and overthrow that lying curse word Blair and his cronies and stick a real political party in their place!!

how will they arrange for the satellite tracking box to be fitted to every car? even old 6v motors?
what will happen if, for example, every time i start my car - shock horror - the tracker fuse blows and they can't track me?
bloody stupid scheme..... wang an extra 1p/litre on petrol and scrap road tax is what i say, that way everyone pays it. and then, just for a change, spend the ruddy cash on the roads! i'm fed up of driving into potholes so deep i need GPS to find my way out. i'm gonna get pulled over by the feds one day cos as i drive home from work at 10pm, i'm swerving all over the place! "been drinking have we sir?" "no officer, just like my wheels to stay round". bah.

It all sounds a bit pie in the sky to me. Theres no way it could ever really work in reality. Although it would be interesting to see if they upheld tax free status for classics.

More silly "think tank" nonsense. Although I quite like the idea of parents getting taxed for driving their fat stupid kids half a mile to school every day in 4x4's. The best idea is to put road tax on fuel, that way you pay more the further you drive, and you pay more if you have a bigger / less economical engine. Kills two birds with one stone. However if they think they're gonna put a tracking device in any of MY cars they can go f*ck themselves. If they did do it I think it would keep getting broken. I'm clumsy like that.

I don't like the idea of being tracked by satelite, it's all a bit big brother. They can get stuffed if they think they're fitting any black box to my car. Have it fitted in the engine bay, oh dear, water damage

restructuring fuel tax is the way to go, like benzboy says that's the route to encouraging people to drive more economically - every time you floor it it's hitting you in the pocket.
the black box idea is insane though, anyone with anything to hide just cuts the wires! and i doubt they could legally wire it into an immobiliser to prevent this as it'd cause all kinds of safety concerns.

Cant see how that would work. It would cost to much to put in place. Plus would this mean that I would pay the same per mile in my Range Rover gas gussler as some one driving an economical small car? Thats hardly fair.

It does sound like an impossible idea. don't think it will ever happen. If they put a transponder on every car could they use it to see if your speeding?

The current tax on fuel is ridiculous - I'm not arguing that. What I'm saying is that if road tax was shifted onto fuel, then we'd get a kind of "pay as you go" scheme where the more you drive the more you pay. That way dear old Mrs Green who does 200 miles a year isn't paying as much as Mr Rep who does 20000 miles a year - it's a much fairer system. Fuel duty, on the other hand, is extortionate seeing as we get fuel cheaper than our neighbours yet end up paying most because of our greedy government.

The worst thing is that we'd probably get taxed even more to cover the cost of the curse word black boxes

hopefully there'll be a way to hack the black boxes and turn them into gps speed trap detectors i don't think this will happen - BUT they did mention one of the more popular charging routes would be the m1 midlands, and they've just finished installing 'overhead information gantries' between j29 and about j25. apparently these gantries are also cabled up for SPECS cameras which i'm sure could be substituted for a london-style charging system. like has been said..... the government will get flak for this countrywide scheme and then just turn around and go "ok, we'll just do it on a few roads instead".... which was probably the plan all along. if they do it up the m1 it's going to be havoc, as there's more than enough country roads alongside to avoid it.

Similar scheme is already on the way in the UAE, similar GPS system but theirs also monitors speed as well as location - so no need for cameras anymore .......
