Hola. I managed to procure an old AlpineStars Al-Mega XT frame with the elevated stays. To say that it is a bit of a retro MTB is an understatement. Unfortunately, there are a couple of cracks in the down tube and I am wondering that if I get these welded up, do we think that it would be ok for some light trail abuse? I will need to get some inserts turned up for the head tube to reduce the size for the headset down from 1 1/4 inch to 1 1/8 inch so that I can find some cheap boingy forks (Really want some old Judy's on there!) - has anyone done this before? Thanks for the read and any advice in advance! ^^ One of these but with no forks or anything atm! Cheers. Rysz.

Nice - havnt seen one for years
have to find an old avocet TURBO gel saddle to go with it :-)
Headset adaptor cups (or even adaptor headsets) are available, and work fine, but you may have a bit of a search getting one as that size headset has been obsolete for a while.
I have a set of not that retro judys (2000) that need servicing, the internals fixing and a respray that you can have for next to nothing :-) They are prototype ones too :-)
Aluminimum frame? You could get it tig welded up, but heat treating might be an issue - for light trailwork it should be fine but keep an eye on it.

Please PM me with the details! Getting adaptors turned up should not be an issue as the local engineering firm owes me a few favours from having pulled his IT out of the mire on more than one occasion! Will be a slow rebuild but should be fun! Rather than an avocet saddle, I want a classic Flite Ti on a USE seatpin anodised in some horrific colour! Also some Deore thumbies if I can find any! Cheers Rysz.

a set of shims would be easy to make - bit of tube with a lip, and interference fit in the head tube
if you cant find deore thumbies, you can easily make a modern version using road bar end shifters and some mounts from sjs cycles
the judys are rather battered - the underside of the CROWN has been smacked with a hammer at in the past (me being an idiot, don't ask), but could very easily be filed smooth) but are all there and could be working without much of an issue.
will pm you with details

Get yourself over on Retrobike.co.uk, every bit of early 90's kit you could possibly want on there, including 1 1/4" forks. I have an '89 Gary Fisher with original Manitou forks that I restored last year. Panaracer Smokes, Deore thumbies, DX groupset, Turbo saddle, Syncros stem and bars, clear Yeti grips, etc. Always wanted an elevated Al-Mega back in the day.

Yep Retrobike is where you need to go ^ I hope you can get it fixed I'd love one of them! try a decent frame builder or something, Awesome, its a peach, I'd go for short travel old Rockshox Manitoui or Pace's, or even just as it s with a fatter tyre ! keep it old, maybe

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Ive got some deore thumbys spare if you need them?
In fact ive got loads of retro mountainbike stuff up for grabs if anyone is doing any up!
I was gonna flog it all on Retro-Bike but to be honest theres a few odd-uns over there!
Oh and i'd leave the rigids on....if you need some kind of suspension go for a Girvin flex stem!!!

Unfortunately, I have no forks for it. Thanks for all the advise gents! Skyway, have you ever used a flexstem? They are awful! I first experienced one on an old pro-flex bike that I had donkeys years ago!
This will be a slow project with a lot of retro touches but mainly it will be a comfy bike for light trail work with modern components for cost really, V-Brakes, Boingy forks, Aheadset and a huge pair of riser bars!
Just need to find my series one Crud Catcher for it! The bike is located in Zummerzet at my folks atm and I will be picking it up in August for the beginnings of the project!
Thanks Again.
Rysz.

I've just stripped an old bike that had a full XT groupset on it, including 7speed thumbies. Was going to ebay it or put in on retro bike but haven't got round to it. Let me know if anythings of interest?

As a paper-round-financed kid, I really wanted a flex stem in the early 90's, never got one, but now I have one on my Raleigh, they are wierd, a bit creaky, not many good reports it seems.

Yup, full set of XT centre pull canti's. They're not the cleanest in the world, but perfectly useable. I'll bring them down to RRG as someone else was also interested in some bits, so I'm taking some anyway if you're going?
