Popped the Cadillac up to have the AC system leak tested and pressure checked to see if a re-gas will get the digital climate control thing working again. Sadly not. And I had a sneaking feeling it wasn't just going to be a couple of O rings... Compressor - leaks on outlet when pressure tested and grinds and rattles when run (the power to it had been disconnected, now I know why). Refurbished compressor with clutch assembly (both are bound to be gonners) $188 +shipping from USA, VAT & duty three downstream leaks in the high pressure pipe area. Replacement is $109. For a frikkin hose. Of course, plus shipping from USA, VAT and duty. Plus the gas, the old type. plus what ever else leaks. Even the proper O rings for this are like $3 each.... I checked the price of the condensor... $98 and the heater core (which I suspect may be clogged) is $30 and a few cents. I can see that lot being £500 with the shipping, VAT and other bits of tat you have to buy to get it to work. Oh, and no guarantee that thats enough junk to fix it. could be more leaks and more faults. NuTTzorZ. At least there's no charge 'cos he couldn't fix it.

I'm guessing that not only will it be expensive, but you'll also be waiting a while for the bits, right?
It really makes you wonder how those Pimps could afford those feather-clad hats when you consider how much the upkeep is!

Dunno, but if someone buggered me I'd think it was pretty foul, no matter how cute he was.
AnywayZ - the compressor is alledgedly the same as some form of Mercedes one, but I doubt that will be any cheaper a souce and will probably have the wrong fittings on or something.
I can get the stuff from RockAuto and have it here in 3-4 days. Except that I can't afford to pay for it. And even then theres no guarantee that once that stuff is fixed something else won't be leaking. As my friendly garage proprietor puts it "you have to be prepared to keep spending on it until it stops leaking". With stuff like this I find it best to budget to replace the lot and then if you don't have to its a bonus.
As said, good to know it cost me nothing to find out the extent of the FUBAR-ness of it, except I had to drive around in a Rover 414 courtesy car for the day. Which is better than bussing it I guess.
I will be using the Benzboy style climate control until winter and hopefully have something else or the money to fix it by then. Or hope its an unusually mild winter. Or eBay it off and buy something else and test the heating and venting system first....

thats a real shame mate, the air conin the sceptre was playing up too but it was because the plastic handle had come loose on the shaft that opens thie big vent under the windscreen !!

I think there's a modern refrigerant that's compatible with the older stuff now so I don't think that's an issue any more. Only heard about it tenuously (when researching regassing my early C4) but apparently most specialists can sort you out with it Hope I didn't imagine all of that

don't be afraid to mess about with it yourself (get it degassed first natch)..
Pipes can be made to order up by several companies and compressors can be retro fitted from anything suitable as long as you can bolt them on to the block somewhere and you can get fittings for them.
You can by a big box of specialist A/C spec O rings for about £15
I have a mate who does AC systems and he showed me where the leak was in my condenser a small ally plate chemical metaled over the surprisingly large hole and all is good and chilled again in m' range rover!!
If your going to get all new parts remember to by a dryer aswell!

Cool beans. I don't know the parts number. What I need is a Hollander Interchange Manual. <htis eBay>
10mpg - I could pull it all apart and if I knew where to go I could get replacements made up take the stuff as templates. Last time I did that with anything though it cost me far more than getting a replacement part shipped from the USA would have by the time we were done. I'm pretty sure its thoroughly degassed itself by now...
Lewis - the chap I used has the "right" gas. Costs a little extra but its the right stuff.
This is why I guess out of the 4 cars I have owned with air con not one has worked.

No idea why we couldnt get it to gas up and click in, may have been a faulty gauge/nozzle? don't care, I know get to drive to wales without sweating :-) ------- turns out it was hellishly overfilled, so my gauge is def borked
