I had this on the main board so I thought I'd add into the readers rides section. It's a 79 S-Class 350 v8. It was imported from Jersey in 2000 and it's only 69k on it so it's in pretty good condition. It's got classic 70's luxobarge handling and is a bit tricky to keep in a straight line partly in thanks to the dustbin lid sized steering wheel. It's turn of speed is pretty terrifying in sports mode thanks to a that v8 up front . What other 70's autos have a sports mode.?? What's to do? Well first off I'm going to swap that humungo steering wheel for a normal 190 wheel if it'll fit? The chrome arches are coming off this weekend as they're not my thing, the kick down doesn't work and neither does the stereo. In the long term I may consider getting it sprayed black (possibly satin black?) as I'm not 100% about the colour and fitting some AMG style alloys (see black merc below).

What he said ^ Nice ol' barge you got there. They do look quite scrumptious with wires and massive slam. I hope there's not too much grot under the chrome rust finders. Looking forward to seeing how this one progresses

The gearbox is a bit odd as it goes
(P)ark (R)everse (D)rive (S)port. It must be sport as it drops a gear and holds it much longer (L).. er, not sure about L but I think it's possibly low ratio for towing stuff although I'm not sure.
The chrome arches are screwed into the lip of the wheel arch with self tappers. I'm hoping it's all good under there but who knows. It's got lots of grunt but uses petrol at a furious pace.

Actually, Dave's wrong - S stands for Slope, which means it's lower ratio.

I've not been brave enough to select L yet but S definetly makes the fastness happen. I've been using S to overtake zee non germans as my kick down doesn't work.

S on my Merc just makes it louder...
But S certainly behaves a lot like a Sports mode.
Later versions (ie W124) have an economy and standard mode.

Yeah my w124 has the same syndrome, kick it down and it just makes more noise. Ha ha great.
These are a very usefull old barge although the last one i saw was a rotten380, donated it's engine and box into my mates123 estate very nicely though. ;D

Like matt and others have said, S is slope L is low. L is the only setting that actually forces the box to start in 1st, S holds second and 3rd for longer before the change up, and L starts in 1st and holds first and second pretty much indefinately (till there's important engine parts on the floor) Although S will kick down into first if floored from a stand still i think.

Nice motor! Satin black no!!! but a nice gloss black would look the nuts! The steering needs checked! They have a big wheel and recirculating ball true, but should go where you want them to with ease. With respect to the gears this box is a three speed I believe so L should hold 1st until you change up manually (there is a rev limiter I believe) and S will hold 2nd until you change manually into top by shifting to drive. When driven as a manual like this they go like you know what!

Thanks for that. I dunno if there is a problem with the steering or I'm just used to a modern car. I'll get it checked out anyway. I took one of the chrome arches off today and as feared there's a lovely combination of filler and rust under there. I just put them back on.

They do steer a bit oddly, especially if there is play in the steering box like on my W123! If you're lucky, it can be adjusted out using the adjuster on top of the steering box. It screws OUT to tighten though! Sloppy balljoints don't help either.
