Right in about 3 or 4 weeks I'm going to get the red shov back on the raod. The insurace company wrote it off as cat D as it was uneconomical to repair but it was only pannel damage nothing structural or mechanical. Do i just take it for an MOT and get it taxed or do i have to go through the DVLA or have it inspected?

My Quattro was a cat D writeoff - took it for an MoT (it still had some left when i bought it but apparently the MoT certificates of writeoffs are destroyed as a matter of course) and then applied for tax on the old V5, then got a new V5 sent through - no problems at all. Back on the road legally.

depends on the category
category D apply for log book and thats it
category C if it was declared C before april 2004 then just apply for log book if it was after that date it needs a VIC check. Find out your nearest VOSA test station book an apointment (�30 ish) after most of the repairs have been carried out. They will check to make sure chassis no.s and engine no.s match all being well they will issue you a certificate and then you can apply for a logbook. But it will be recorded on the logbook that the vehicle has had major crash damage.
category B can only be bought by a registered breaker illegal to sell to someone who isnt. You can sell all spare parts but not the chassis. This vehicle cannot come back on the road.

The category doesnt necessarily mean how bad the vehicle is damaged but how much it would cost to repair compared with the value. It also means a lot of old cars with minor damage become cat B for example a nissan silvia S12 for sale in a local salvage yard car was immaculate no body damage low mileage but someone had broke in (no door lock damage) broke the ignition barrel and cowl and that was all car was classified as CAT B because it would be beyond economic repair to buy and fit a new nissan steering lock.

i thought cat a's and b's were only for dangerous levels of damage, nothing to do with cost?
my audi only cost £275, needed a steering lock - cost £120 fitted cos it's a bit of a curse word. that's half the cost of the car again but it was only a cat D. the cat b ones just seemed to be the rollovers or high-speed accidents.

When I was working in a salvage yard we used to see cars come in with broken tail lights and bent bumpers and they'd be cat b, spares only.
Its laughable really, considering we're supposed to be enviromentally friendly and recycle everything and here they are throwing perfectly usable cars away all because the insurance companies have got their heads up their arses.
