I have 2 rim options, 4x15 and 6x15.
I need full profile tyres or there abouts. Whats the biggest/smallest i can do?
Can i put 185 on a 4" rim? What about 165 on a 6" rim.
As i say, full profile, don't want it to look modern.
I can probably sort out some inbetween sizes but these are the 2 extremes of my option range.

165 is good and square on a 6" wide rim. would be pushing it a bit to put a 185 on a 4 methinks. although a 185 on a 6 would be better. you sure you haven't got those the wrong way round

I'm sure.
What about a 175 then?
Thing is, i need a rolling radius around 640-650mm I'm restricted on tyre width. Ive cut the centers out the rims and have the options of fitting 4 or 6 inch rims.
I need to decide on rims, then weld them onto the centers, then fit the tyres.
If i weld 6" rims on and 185 wont fit the arch i'd have to fit smaller tyres. If i fit 4" rims and 185 would fit the arch i'd want the extra rolling radius.
Thats why i needed to know the extremes.
165/80/15's are reasonably easy to find. 185's arent, neither are 175.
I need to work this all out so i buy the right stuff. Wish i had all the options to hand so i could try them.
I also need to consider whats going to happen when i drop it 4" ;D
At least i have the luxury of adjusting offset to suit!

Oh yeah, one other thing.
If a 185 tyre fitts the arch i guess it doesnt matter what width the rim is? As long as offsets are the same.
Kee, you work at a tyre place?

Thanks. I can already work out the rolling radius but that calculator tels you how much it effects your speed too Nice one! Its amazing how little difference it really makes unless you do something drastic.

i used to work at an exhaust place, performance exhausts mind finished there now and have a few months off. i wouldn't have thought the rim width would have much effect on the tyre width. go for 165's

VW, yeah I still have the car. Actually I've owned it since 1983 (sheet, that's 25 years now! ;D) but it has been a hot rod since 1972.
Spec is as follows - 1700cc pre-Xflow Kent engine built to Cosworth Mk9 spec by Burtons, estimated 110bhp at the flywheel; 2000E 4-speed box; Anglia 105E van back axle with 4.125 gears; HA Viva front using reversed-eye spring, Nick Butler built alloy hubs and Magnum discs / calipers; 145R15 Firestone F-560 tyres up front on stock Minx 4x15-inch rims; 165R15 Firestone F-560 tyres on 6x15-inch rims (Minx centre, XJ6 rim), 4-inch back spacing. Oh, and a 3-inch roof chop done a-la New Angle Anglia. ;D

Have you back halved the chassis? If not, you sure on 4" backspace?
I used VW centers and audi 6" rims, tacked them together today. I did 3" backspace, gave reasonable clearance between tyre/chassis and tyre/wing. Didnt look like theres room for 4" backspace. I mocked it up with 195/70 tyres though cos they were already on the rim. Should give enoguh clearance for the heavy droppage i plan too ;D
We shall see though, may have f****d up a bit, worst comes to the worst ill pull the bottom edges of the wing a little.

No, chassis is stock (but boxed where necessary) and definitely 4-inch backspace - but then I am running a 105E van axle and that's 2-inches wider than the car axle.
Come to think of it I've got 3/8th spacers on as well (running non-parallel A35 leaf-springs - wider apart at front) otherwise I'd have only had 5mm clearance between the tyre and the springs at the front.

Nope, not going anywhere this year ; work "restructuring" (loss of 24/7 rota working) means I've had to loose a large wedge of income so no money for extras this year until I can thin my fleet out.
