There has been a drought of decent car movies. There have been plenty of Fast and The Furious and similar things, Transformers or Herbie or whatever as well.
SFX do notmake up for crappy plots. Also SFX have pushed REAL car stunts out of movies which is a shame. Stunts should be done by drivers, not by computer pixels.
Also remembering that with the climate of political correctness in "liberal" Hollywood these days you're more likely to find "An Inconvenient Truth" being pushed as a car movie than Smokie & The Bandit IV....
However, this is just another of Hollywood's run of remakes. The US title for it tells you where they got their idea, its listed as Death Race 3000....
Now while this looks like all jolly fun, you have to remember remakes of such as The Italian Job, Get Carter and the like...

Their "navigators" are certainly easier on the eyes than the average after market sat-nav ;D ;D
But in all seriousness, this does look like it's gonna be worth a watch

Much more like it, nice find! Agree with you Alistair, it's going to be painfully contrived Hollywood tat no question. And as Pog says it's got Jason Strap-on which is fair warning as to the kind of thing we can expect really. But still, in a drought of decent road films even a morsel like Death Race starts to look like a banquet! On the plus side, Mad Max 4 is still supposed to be in the pipeline.... theres hope yet!

I like Jason Statham, as I don't try to take all cinema seriously. He's great for a mindless action flick, no doubt.
Not forgetting of course Transporter 3 is out in November too, which will be getting a peek, as well as this.

I have to admit I am plot simpleton when it comes to movies, thus I quite enjoy Jason Statham movies. Its on the watch/Purchase list for sure.
Also I am a avid fan of Jason's training regime so tend to watch his movies.
Humm that "running on empty" looks wicked wonder if the DVD is on Play.

Mad Max 4? You mean that Tina Turner turdfest didn't kill them off completely? And you know whats sad? I read that Mad Max 3 was the biggest grossing off the three movies. Please tell me its a lie. I don't want to live in THAT world.

Seems you may yet, though its still only rumours etc.. whatever happens it wont have Gibson in it and George Miller wont be directing- it will probably be a crock of wibblepoo but you never know.

Statham may be more wooden than a tree trunk BUT, swmbo goes funny at the knees at any film he's in so at least i've got an excuse to drag her to the flicks for a hopeless car movie.....Result!

I've got all interested in this "running on Empty" now thanks to Stooby! It appears to go by the title "Wild Wheels" and also "Fast lane Fever"...... which broadens the search but I still can't nail down a DVD source If anyone has any better luck let me know

I'd hate to think Mad max 3 was the highest grossing out of the trilogy, no2's one of, if not THE greatest road movies of all time. No1 was damn cool too. But 3 ?!?!? ..... they ignored the winning formula of the previous 2 and left all the cool post apocalyptic cars/trucks out and stuck some daft warbling hasbeen lounge singer in there instead, i mean wtf!

However, this is just another of Hollywood's run of remakes. The US title for it tells you where they got their idea, its listed as Death Race 3000.... Now while this looks like all jolly fun, you have to remember remakes of such as The Italian Job, Get Carter and the like... It looks like it shares nothing with Death Race 2000 except a race. Death Race 2000 is a grotesque, over the top satire where people were killed for the fun of it. This looks to be played straight - if you're going to play it straight why would you get an "actor" of the calibre of Jason Statham? Seems to be this strange idea in Hollywood that you can justify shoddy remakes/"re-imaginings" and belated sequels if they make it someway "moral" or "righteous": escaping illegal imprisonment in this, Sly rescuing charity workers and doctors in the utterly disgraceful Rambo 4, Viggo Mortensen driving across country to get to his pregnant wife in the made-for-tv remake of Vanishing Point, instead of just doing it for a bet while boshing loads of drugs.... Basically, it looks dire and unimaginative, it has Lovejoy in it and Paul W.S. Anderson has directed some, in fact most, of the worst films I've ever seen. [/O.T. ranting]

Statham or whatever his name is, is rubbish, but strangely watchable rubbish. Maybe it was just the girl with the 'Death by Bunny' tattoo in Transporter 2 that made it watchable though LOL. Anyhow that aus film sounds interesting. IMDB link www.imdb.com/title/tt0084616/And for those not averse to such things I believe you can download it via the medium of bitorrent. And you gotta be kidding about Mad Max 3...... SURELY?!?! That just cant be true, it was rubbish! 1 & 2 were ace! Speaking of Random car movies you havent heard of.... has anyone seen the 2 (count em!) Opel Manta movies from Germany? ("Manta Manta" and "Manta - Der Film") both completely mad, but sadly I don't speak german and cant find subtitles for them. Imdb - www.imdb.com/title/tt0102397/ and www.imdb.com/title/tt0102396/ and some youtube action too
