me and my mates are plannin a snow boarding road trip for next year! i've been offered an n reg diesel manual cherokee but it's got a missfire! anyone know any common things it might be? I was thinking maybe injector or rocker! also if anyone else knows of problems with them it might be handy! I know the petrol autos suffer with rear axles but don't know about the diesels!

The rear axle problem is actually not really due to the axle itself - it's caused by the rear (petrol) springs sagging, which increases the load on the diff and consequently causes it to wear prematurely. Switching to diesel springs solves this issue, if it's present on the vehicle. I've been told the diesel ones are not great - they have induvidual head per cylinder and have an unnerving tendancy to nuke gaskets due to poor maintainence and consequently repair gets expensive.....and then blow them again, once replaced. We covered it here: retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=23829

Rust rust and more rust, the ones ive seen have come from the factory with it. My mate had to replace the entire floor in his, think it was a p reg, if your keeping if for longer than just the road trip i would have a good look underneath it!

engines are a vm diesel unit and not reliable at all as already said head/headgasket problems are the main issues parts can get a bit expensive roof also rust badly on them if you could justify the fuel bill go for the 4.0 petrol version

I can only go on what i've been told but i would avoid a diesel cherokee like the plauge. If you can find one a diesel shogun or land cruiser would be the best option.

Plus unless you are good with a welder or a mate that does it cheap, avoid early discos too, tempting as cheap as they are, they are also shocking for the boots rusting out of them

I know a few people who have had diesel cherokee's some were good some were bad.As for Discovery's the boots rust out but its only a rivited panel in the rear so easy to replace, if they have twin sunroofs then the rear floor in front of the back seats is more than likely to be rotten.Yes cherokee has a VM motori engine as used in the Range Rover diesel (1986-1992) Rover 825D,Ford Scorpio 2.5 TD,Frontera 2.5TD.They have 4 separate cylinder heads and the coolant changes must be adhered to otherwise after awhile the waterways corrode and overheating occurs, blowing gaskets. And like its been said before once repaired it will do it again. This is what scraps most of the cars fitted with these engines. If it has history that says about the coolant changes you should be ok.

All of the above (especially about the banks of heads blowing) and also, in my limited experience, absolutely horrible to drive.

I replaced a head gasket on a 5 cylinder VM diesel engined Cherokee and it caused me nothing but hassle! It turned out that the oil in the coolant problem was caused by a faulty oil cooler as well as the gasket. Also worth noting that ALL 5 heads were cracked! The heads are easy enough to do as it's pretty basic, but quite time consuming.
I agree with previous posts....don't buy it!

4.0's a sweet mill though......Good potential too! LPG for the win in this instance, although I never found mine that bad on petrol either.

don't be tempted by early discoverys either, as cheap as they are, unless you weld or have a mate that does, the boots in them just RUST

so I'm guessing maybe I shouldn't buy it then it's only because it's cheap (and metallic orange ) that I was interested as I enjoy taking cheap old wrecks on long road trips coz it's more of a rush not knowing if you'll make it was actually looking for an early 2.0 8v frontera! I know there pants but thats kinda the point! oh and cheap ;D yeah delica's do rock the phat one but they're out of budget unfortunately, as are pajero's, land cruisers and the one I really wanted, an early 4.0 non turbo diesel nissan patrol lwb so can anyone suggest an easy to find budget motor for the trip?

Have a look at the return pipes from the injectors- the cloth braided ones that look like miniature vauxhall fuel lines. They perish and split and make the engine run badly. Takes 10 minutes to replace them.

Oh, and Delicias do about 25-30mpg on a road trip (if you're towing a Volvo 142 and massive car trailer)

shame you can't get them for about £500 I paid £200 for this one - completely stripped out the rear seats etc... and sold the interior for £500 (£300 profit and a free van!!) Ran it for a year as my work van/off roader where I abused the daylights out of it.....and have just sold it for £1,000 too.... ;D ;D ;D Now working on a real minter that cost me £400 and will get abused for the forthcoming year or so....

Frontera 2.0 are not that bad, when i did my off road training they mostly used them.I was using a pajero 2.8 td,when i asked the instructor about why he was using crappy vauxhalls he quickly shot me down.Apparently they are excellent off roaders , and he was a hardened Land rover fan.He said he only used some land rovers because thats what people expect to use when they come for training.
