Can someone please define what exactly is a Gasser. The way I see it is old school looking racers that appear high in stance and also invariably have some sort of signwritten name drawn in a 50's style of font. I doubt my assumption is quite correct, so can someone please elaborate cheers

I managed to get a very definative explaination via a work collegue and a phone call. I was pointed towards that gassermadness site at the same time too. I was asking in general terms not just VW related ones. Cool pics too (as always)

Gasser,..old school term for all cars that competed in the old drag racing class of GAS/Modified .Meaning that anything went in the engine department but the engine had to run on GAS,or petrol as it is known in the surreal world. So,as the above pics showed, you had modified light weight cars such as Willys and Anglias,or as George Montgomery had,a Ford Prefect. most were powered by injected chevies. The really adventurous ran Chrysler hemi's or Oldsmobiles. As opposed to Altered,or Fuel Coupes(later to be called "funny cars ")Gassers were usually restricted to body mods such as chopped tops only.Although anything went when it came to fibreglass panels and lexan windows etc. A/gas was petrol.AA/GAS was supercharged. A= the big engines,350 plus cubic inch.,you went down to B/gas which were 300 cubic inch or there abouts down to Z/gas which was proberbly a ride on mower. Why the mile high stance?,that was bought about more by fashion than anything. A fashion trend introduced by the famous Ramchargers, the actual Crysler engineers who ran a Drag team. They built a dodge coupe in 1959 ,powered by a 354 cubic inch Hemi to race at the early Drags. Their unlimited resources were used to determine the best posistion for the heavy Hemi in the small (!!?) dodge. It meant the engine had to be at three feet off the ground,so the car was duly lifted to adapt to this. The fact this ugly creation beat everyone in sight caused all the oppostion to "assume the stance". This it folks, the Originall" high and MIGHTY" !! The engine was so high it was hard against the underside of the bonnet.and check out the exhaust, remember this was Chrysler...not some backyard effort.the rules were changed by NHRA to restrict the center height of the crankshaft, ruling the car out.it won too often. PS,High and mighty actually ran in C/altered,because the ramchargers said it was a class to dominated by Chevys. The guys in the pic are Chrysler boffins,Mauri Leising,Doug Patterson, and Jack McPherson.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.
