The steelies are going to be banded from 4" to (hopefully) 6" depending on the clearance behind the sliding door?? They may have to be 5.5" if the 6" proves too much?? curse word that, 6" wide and alter the lower slider hinge of the door if it fouls. Popular mod for the VW camper brigade.

OK - I've had a 'moment' and suddenly got it into my head that I want to take a grinder to the roof! Please do your best to convince me that this is a BAD idea.....because I really need someone to bring me to my senses! I know that it won't be an easy job and well aware of the majority of what is involved - but I can handle the glass side of things no problem.....the metalwork will be tricky, but I'm patient and methodical, so not too many worries there...but what do you guys reckon?? Before: After: Obviously there will be deeper rimmage and some appropriate boots for the shoes.....along with some retro stuff on the inside (original Bedford radio, some Cobra classics etc....) If I can get to rent a garage near me I'll be VERY tempted to go ahead and do this. 4" chop gives about 1" headroom on the crossmember, so foam padded rooflining going to be essential if you guys don't stop me. ;D

If this is gonna be your daily work van, I'd stick to slam and wheels for know, and then look at a roof chop later.
I do like that bottom pic, partially because it's hovering!

I like a good roof chop as much as the next man but I much prefer this stock height. When its dropped it'll look so much better and u'll not want to chop it I bet. If you're really that keen to cut it, why not put one of those 'panoramic' roofs in it like those new Astras and stuff? Maybe even a yellow tinted perspex one?? If you're just wanting to do some metalwork you could always smooth out the side panels where the window shapes are (dunno how else to describe that, I'm sure there's a word for it!).
And try go as wide as you can on the rims, you know you want to anyway!
I love this little bus.

Thanks guys - it's what I was hoping to hear I just got it into my head the other day that I wanted to chop it - I guess I thought it would look too top-heavy if slammed with all that roofline above, but as Tom says, slam it first and see from there. Not too worried about it being off the road for a while because I've got a work van (or two) already on the road. Also been looking at bagging it - not cheap.....but BOY how cool would that be

Would be cool bagged, at least u'd be able to drive it in comfort. I definitely think that if you drop it first you will not want to chop it

Having driven a few of those sooty vans, would you have any headroom if you chopped it? I don't recollect there being alot of room in the cab to start with, there again, I am a 17st F.B ;D

I wanna play in photoshop I'm afraid not, but I hope to pick up some spare (standard) rims/tyres this weekend which will mean I can move it around and also get some better shots. Will let you know when I get some - would love to see what you have in mind?

Chop, Chop I knew you'd say that Richie - gonna get it dropped and running first ans then think about what I want to do with the roof.... If you & Steve fancy a trip to Brizzle to help, then you might twist my arm enough to give it a go....

I'm liking the roof chop! But i'd be just as happy to see one of these with a stock body but slammed to hell! Either way is a win
