good luck..
one piece of advice if i may, keep your sights set high, if you are willing to work for very little you'd be amazed at the type of establishment you could end up working/learning in, pick a discipline that takes your fancy motorsport/supercars/yankee/4x4/superbikes/customs etc etc etc and contact them try to wangle an interview they need mechanics just like everyone else yaknow.
And make sure your getting damn good training/experience as your not taking a proper wage don't let some ape take advantage of your keeness to learn.

Practically nothing I can afford! I'm talking on a project level of course, not that I have a garage. Good luck you'll find something, or set your sights start our own business. just don't lose your enthusiasm

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

best advise i can give is, if you want to stay a real mechanic, steer clear of main dealers/large garages. You'll become a fitter rather than a mechanic. Thats why i walked out of Fords. large sales forcourts often have their own mechanics. Its a good place to look, they'd rather be paying for parts to be fixed than swapped over.
Well done by the way

Piece of friendly advice from someone who has to hire and fire people for a living.
Never, ever, under any circumstances, tell a future employer that you´re prepared to work for nothing......because if you do, you will!
You need to impress them with your personality, your qualifications, your "get up and go", your keenness to learn etc and not because you´re cheap!!
Congratulations on your qualification and you might want to reconsider your 20 mile travelling boundry. The interesting jobs are not automatically local, look at me I ended up in Germany!!! ;D
Good luck with your search, keep us posted.

Heres a job for you - come up to Newcastle and restore my camper van for me . i can pay a pittance per week, accomodation is included (in the camper), and the garage is stocked with cola and crisps On a serious note, i hope you manage to become a proper mechanic like i wanted to be, but i had a lack of GCSEs which put paid to that idea

thats some great advice, thanks everyone but I'm soo desperate to work in a garage :/ and I'm staying clear of main dealers to an extent but if nothing comes up then ill apply to them aswell :/ I would also loooveeee to set up my own busines but only having a weekend job means cash is tight and theres quite a few garages already around here. pandaselecta: I might take you up on that Ryan.

one word...
specialise...
there little to no money in lashing up eurojaptat and theres even less reward as all you get is a customer who's car is the same as it was to start with winging about the bill..
I run my own business (one man band at the mo) and I do mainly vintage and classic cars, customers are so much more involved and appreciative of your work and at the end of a day if you do your job well, then you have helped preserve a bit of history.
I also do trackside support and let me tell you when a racecar you have prepared comes flying round a track faster than it has ever gone before using an engine you personally carefully built, it gives you a hell of a good feeling..

If you have no luck getting employed, think about starting your own mobile servicing business, couple of guys around here do that and they tick over nicely go down to princes trust and get some advice either way as they can help with job searching

tbh i used to use a mobile guy, bloody good he was too, was always up for me helping out to learn a thing or 2 and as he only needed a van was v.easy to set up. he's retired now and ive not seen a local mobile mechanic for at least 3 years round here. so that could be a good way to earn a bit and learn some more at the same time. I'm sure through places like here, vzi and various other forums you really could end up with a nice little business and after all working for yourself is always better than working for someone else.

ryan,
firstly I applaud you on getting a "trade" its an excellent start in life, which lets face it in this country is getting harder to do each day so well done mate ;D
have you started building a portfolio, what i mean is every car you do/repair/modify have like a progress thread like on here, detailed pics showing you are capable of the task, people often say a picture tells a thousand words, and if your lucky enough to get an interview it'd impress the hell outta me if when i asked "wots that under your arm son??" you replied " oh its a portfolio of my work with signed declarations of customer satisfaction....sir"
also loads of internet printing companies are offering leaflets at silly money ( i know you said monies tight but, again the old saying speculate to accumilate)
get a set designed (by a forum member who's sh*t hot on photoshop) rally your mates and get posting locally, sheffs a BIG place and believe me, people are generally lazy so if they've got someone local who will come to THEM and mend their car I think you're onto a winner, for the price of the leaflets its gotta be worth a go and you may get some decent work from it to tide you over while you get into full time employment.
once again mate well done and good luck ;D

As already said, specialise. 1, in classic cars (they are not going to change so you won't need to do another refresher course and buy yet another set of programmes for your laptop. Most mechanics who apprenticed on today's classic cars are retiring. The cars are still there but those who work on them are not.
2, learn/practice more welding, see above.
Why did I scrap that huge feckin camper?? You could've stayed at mine, we got loads of work! BTW I am originally from Sheffileld, now live in West London!
BTW why is this in for sale? maybe you would be better putting an ad in the general section.

That sounds like a plan!! but in this day and age, I just cant stock a van up and go around, are there any legalitys that go with it? stuff like insurance incase anything happens to a customers car, tax bills, stuff like that? tbh I used to use a mobile guy, bloody good he was too, was always up for me helping out to learn a thing or 2 and as he only needed a van was v.easy to set up. he's retired now and ive not seen a local mobile mechanic for at least 3 years round here. so that could be a good way to earn a bit and learn some more at the same time. I was gonna make a portfolio of my transmission swap but i don't have many pics, only ones of the engine coming out of the bay My mums car is getting ready for a major service so ill tak pics of that and if a really kind admin would move this thread I will be veyr happy ;D Ryan.
