OK, so I was just wondering what you guys considered to be a real drivers car? Retro or not-so-retro... I've never really owned a car I'd consider to be a real "drivers car" as usually the cars I own are big old barges! Good for cruizin' at 5mph, absolutely curse word when it comes to fast twisty stuff! ;D But I've driven a few that I think qualify.... Not particularly retro (but will be), the Fiat Cinquecento really feels like it wants to be driven hard! I like it a lot and would consider that to ba a drivers car... Most Alfas seem to be real track-racer-wannabe's too. They always feel really firm and sure-footed. BMW e30 325i MTech - that thing just NEVER lost grip - phenomenal handling on that thing, and plenty of power too! What say you? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I would say that either a Pug 205 or later 106 GTI are best fun you can have with your pants on for the money. I've currently got a 106 Rallye and I get a huge thrill beaning it around country roads.
I'd would say Saxo VTS's too, but as long as you don't mind the association people make with those cars, then you're fine.

I had a first generation CRX with the 16 valve engine. Closest thing I've ever driven to a road legal go kart and i loved it to bits ;D.

gonna be slightly biased as to what I've driven - 205 GTI 1.9 was nice, if a bit tram-liney in some cases. But dead cheap, really good laugh. Alternative driving styles for that one ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) 308GTB, preferably ex-competition with 290BHP. Now there's a man's driving machine (dons moustache). *clink*clink*scream* through the gears. But I'd stick a vote in for the Sprint - yes, it might not be the outright fastest, best handling (or stopping for that matter) but everytime I turned the key it just begged to go to the redline and step out the rear nicely everywhere....just so much fun on budget rears. Although it was fairly tidy round corners it would get a bit uncontrollable the faster you went. Fun blatting to 71 in 11.4 seconds though, as the adverts always pimped ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) which is fast by my 1850 at the moment ;D

best drivers cars I`ve owned are
Corolla GT AE86 Great handling good engine
BMW 525i E34. For such a big car the handling was top notch loses its composure a bit on twisty bumpy B roads but they werent designed for that. Bit underpowered though might have to try an M next time ;D.
My MK1 escort is fantastic fun and you can hold it sideways all day without trying but its not what you would call a drivers car.
Monza GSE excellent handling and better ride quality than a lot of modern cars. Great fun on any roads.
Ideal drivers car: Porsche 911 RS 2.7 1973

Curiously for a car that was designed as a family runabout first and a rally car second, the Imp isn't a bad little drivers car, especially the sportier models or one that's been given little minor adjustments like mine, even a good wide set of tyres and a little steering wheel to replace the bus sized thing Rootes insisted on fitting to all its cars can make an Imp feel sporty even if it only has the basic engine. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) I think it's something to do with the fact that Coventry Climax engineers were involved with the engine, plus Mike Parkes did a lot of work with Ferrari, so there were plenty of sporting influences around on the project. That and it's rear engined. Alright it's no road burner, and a number of you out there have cars that are far faster on the straights, have better brakes, and in some cases will corner faster (although a well prepped Imp will give a lot of cars a run for their money round the bends as long as you know how to handle a fast rear engined car) but neither's a Pug 106, or Pug 205, or many other great drives, the point is it makes you smile when you drive it even if you're not breaking the speed limit. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) There are plenty of other cars like that, I know someone who had a RWD Sierra XR4, which was a real lairy b*stard, again sure the 4x4 might have been faster in the turns and probably on the straights, and sure a Cosworth is without a doubt faster, but the XR4 is great fun, and gives you a pretty massive grin when you drive it hard, considering you can pick one up for practically nothing these days. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

My choice, as some might realise, would have to be a 205 GTI 1.9. Quick as you want but if you're feeling lazy just stick it in 5th and cruise. There's none of this 16valve rev the t*ts off it to go fast with a 1.9. Oh and it would have to be red - the fastest colour

I tend to agree Phoenix, my E34 535 is great, if you wanna drive slow you can, and if you want to be a total hooligan its no problem either even with the slush box.. it does have an LSD as standard which is a big help ;D

in my experience but no particular order mk1 A.s.t.r.a 1.6sr - underrated, unexpected, but fun for fwd one of the best handling A.s.t.r.a's too ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) sierra xr4i - again underrated but nice an torquey and easy to drift (on private roads of course!) also looks loads better than the cossie mini + twisty roads = big grins. enough said.

Fiat 130TC Abarth. FWD but still fun. A mate had one and let me have a go. Silly boy. I scared the pants off us both with our friend in the back wetting himself with laughter as I threw it into a roundabout on the A20 near brands, the back stepped out nicely and just in time to save the car and my wallet.

My Sylva Striker Fireblade was a good gripper... Not much over 120 flat out, but it would crack the ton somewhere around 8 secs and stick like dried sh!t to a fluffy blanket. I can't believe that a 127 is quicker/better than an integrale, the 'grale was not too far behind my Striker on a twisty road and I was quicker than my mate's Caterham R300. As in most of these cases the most important component is the 'special' nut behind the 'wheel. Real world drivers cars have to be, Alfa Scud, Pug 205 (rallye, 1.4 xs and 1.6/1.9 GTi) and the boxy bimmer iS & M3. A few of my mates have made Nova's quick, but so far removed from the original that they cannot be classed as the same, eg installing a rear beam axle with long travel coilovers, a 190bhp 1.6 xe engine with all the trick throttle bodies, verniered cams, 3D engine management, etc, etc... Far doos, they do tend to rally 'em, but that also means that they have to pass an MOT and be road legal! Their last creation is taking shape here! I personally find that any car that can be driven upto and past it's limits easily is a good car, which is why I used to enjoy driving a 2CV!! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) ;D BB

I think an ideal driver's car is one that is not only suitably capable in terms of performance but one that leaves the driver feeling rewarded after a good 'spirited' drive yet at the same time let them know if their driving was below par - for me anyway its all about feedback. I feel lucky to own what I consider to be one of the best drivers cars of recent years, despite being FWD, it always puts a big grin on my face after attacking my favourite B road - it manages to have oodles of grip yet tell you when you're getting near the limit, combine this with balance you can play with in conjunction with that rev-hungry engine - the Integra gets my vote... My ITR ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

mk1 astra 1.6 sr was underated because the crank bearings never lasted long enough to appreciate the fact that ther car was actually quite good. "e30 m3 poncy" kiss my ar**. superb car if you are a good enough driver. its only poncy if you put stupidly big wheels on and ruin the handling. dolomite sprint i love but its far too wayward. i love a sideways car but dolly's with good power go sideways, then come back and go further the other way. why has nobody mention cheap as chips v6 capri. reasonably quick, handle reasonably well, feel great and you can hang the ![](http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/underwire/2009/11/fox_60.jpg) out by the minute. in the same vein as the hb - moggy minor. no power, grip or breaks but bloody good fun to drive beyond the limit at sensible speeds.
