My second beetle has engine trouble with its 1200 single port. The car starts first time with no problems and runs and sounds great. After about 30 seconds of running at fast idle, when the engine starts to warm through white/blue smoke appears from both tailpipes, one more so than the other. This is accompanied by oil from the more smoky side, which if the engine runs long enough drips from this tailpipe. Oil pressure is good (about 40 psi) and compression readings are within the 110-130 psi range for all cylinders. Examination of the plugs after running shows they are relatively clean but slightly oily.
Initially I had thought that this smoke was a result of some Redex that I had put down the cylinders after the engine was dormant for a while, or some paint from the exhaust burning off. I had considered that the jetting may be incorrect and it’s running far too lean or something. However the dripping oil from the tailpipe makes me think it’s internal. Compression testing after a squirt of oil in each cylinder increases the readings, on one cylinder by about 30 psi.
Interestingly the smoke smells of burning potatoes but doesn’t really smell typically oily.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received before I take it out and strip it down on the bench.

Well obviously I'm going to have to stick some sort of huge, powerful motor in (if I can't fix this 34 hp beauty) Stu-I think you'll agree.

sounds like you've done your head gasket To be honest...whatever it is, its gonna have to come out anyway (for the sake of an hour) - while its out, stick something a bit fruitier in (read 1900cc+). No one likes driving gutless bugs ;D

Just for curiousity's sake, anyone got any links for Scooby turbo'd VWs?
Just wondering how easy the conversion is on a T1/2/3/4...

There's a few scooby powered dubs about - i'll see if i can fish out some info.
It's no straight swap, but it can be done - just with a fair bit of modification and fabrication
