Its been on my 'to do' list for over a year and now its on the 'done' list at last! ;D this is how my longboard looked on thursday,I normally paint it to match the car ,but last year I got started and then it got buried in the shed. I stripped off all the old paint and damaged wood then clear sealed it, Got out my trusty roll of striping tape and rattle cans.then went retro..... It's got Kryptonics,a power pivot, old skool santa cruz and thrasher stickers and I'm running Randall 180 trucks with Independent downhill bearings which give it a real smooth ride. Its great for carving and stable as hell for bombing on the flat or downhill. At 5''9 long my son and I ride it together, its a blast! I've been blasting around the streets on it this evening pretending I'm not 37 ;D CHECK OUT www.stillstoked.co.uk/

Good God, LOVE the longboard...remember those ultra-slim G&S Henry Hester decks that were around back in the late 70's?? Just found this on the Bay....I've still got my Hobie Hustler which I won in a Sun competition in 1978, though at 18 1/2 stone I don't think I'll be getting on it again.

I went digging around at my Mother's yesterday and found my 'Dirt' board which will be rebuilt once I find the wheels.it has SKY HOOK foot clips to prevent you loosing the board on the rough stuff. I found this too.... 1 of my 1st boards from the 70's.the deck is knaff, but the wheels are cool.my first wooden deck was a Dogtown pool board and when I snapped it the wheels got put on here. they are MAGLINE's from the states with 5 spoke ali hubs and rubber tyres over the top! FTW! ;D

tarmac mainly, the bigger the board the better they handle for criusing and carving.boards like this are great for learning 'pop-ups' and other surfing moves without having to get wet,its what they were designed for(check the link below)I use it mainly for blasting around after my son while he rides his bike or we ride it together.its great fun and as stable as a table! ;D www.stillstoked.co.uk/

is riding longboard much different to skateboard? i assume it would be smoother...
never got the hang of a skateboard (only tried for a few mins to be fair lol) was more of a jump bike man, but always had the hankering for a long board.
any models to look out for/avoid? any tips/tricks?

Hi Sparko, longboards are very different to conventional boards,it really depends what you want the board for as to which you should buy.there are lots, slalom, downhill, cruisers, dirt boards, surf trainers each have there own set up and style.generally they have larger wheels to creat a smoother ride, the better set ups have slalom style trucks like www.holeytruck.com or Randals which turn further and smoother than others.the longer the board the less it will turn unless you have this type of truck. this is another of my boards it has randal 180 trucks and turns real tight, almost in its own length.it has small wheels on it at present to keep the speed down because my 5yr old is learning to ride it.it would normally have kryptonic route 70s which are bigger, harder and much faster.longboards roll further and take alot less effort because they creat less drag if they are set up right which makes for a more layed back and graceful ride. as for tricks I tend to stick to cruising and carving when I'm out with my children but others modify tricks from short boards and ride pipes too. youtube is full of great clips of longboarders in action, this is one of my favourites you can spend a hell of alot on a longboard but you don't need to. I think quality hardware gives the best ride, wheels like Orangatang, alligator or kryptonic paired with holey trucks or randals will give great handling on most decks,Sector 9 creat popular off the shelf completes as do barfoot and dreggs but they come at a cost! steer clear of cheap set ups that you find at 'soccer sport' or in Argos and you should find something to have fun with below £100.check on the web, maybe theres a store near you that will let you try before you buy. happy hunting Bryan
