I think its December 1996 ish, before that you could drive anything upto a 7.5 ton, after its anything up to 3.5 ton. I *think* you can take a mini test and drive a 7.5 tonner without having to go to the expense and hassle of getting a class 2 licence.
Bonus of owning a truck over 3.5 ton is that you can use the licence thing as a reason not to let people borrow it!

Tachos aren't a problem, piece of cake in fact. Other things about extended chassis trucks are: a) props are usually specially made and tricky if they break, some extentions are laughably bad and also, apprantly, you are not allowed something like more than a 45% overhang from the rear axle. Having seen some of the bloody awful rubbish touted about on eBay I wouldn't drive next door in most of them. Even better still are these supposedly MOT exempt beavertail trucks: there isn't a single beavertail out there which is genuinely test exempt.

My mate had a beaver that was test exempt, I saw all the paperwork and the plate too. Horrible thing, the lack of MOT meant no maintenance ever, engine expoded and it was weighed in. He was pulled by plod in it once and they were ok with the MOT exempt thing, less impressed with his lack of approprate licence though, 7.5 ton beaver + 2 ton trailer = class 1 licence!
His beaver was pretty old though, I'm sure the laws have changed.
Not too sure on the tacho thing either, if you have a tacho youll need an operators licence too I think, which you don't need if its a "personal use only" vehicle.

Aye, you can go with an 'o' licence (full or restricted) or not bother if it's your own stuff. I got the info about MOT exemption from VOSA Tim. There's definate;y a sort of grey area in that you can get certificates to exempt them and a lot of police etc would be happy with that. However the only truly exempt ones have to be 3501kgs or more and no capable of carrying goods on the bed of the truck, Therefore a slide bed with a spec lift is not test exempt but a spec lift only is, as long as 3501kgs or more. Also, just to 'help' matters if you took a car to scrap on a spec lift and bought the wheels home on the back of it you would be breaking the exemption rule as you are carrying goods! Honestly, that's straight from a few people at VOSA. The other thing is that how many of these test exempt trucks are ever properly serviced and maintained? I know an MOT certificate is only a notice that on the day of the test the vehilce met the standards but I'd rather that once a year than some clapped out old truck which hasn't seen maintenance since my love life once flourished!

also 'Recovery' classed beavertails that are run MOT exempt are not allowed to do anything but go to and from breakdowns, and only carry disabled vehicles, NOT transport your own car or other people's all over the place or even nip down to the shops. Course if you get pulled in your MOT motor, you ARE on your way to a breakdown, or the car in the back IS broken.

Its better just to have an MOT and have piece of mind your kingpins/brakelines/spring shackles are up to spec. My mates beaver was a great truck but within a few years it completely died in every aspect..MOT exempt doesnt mean spanner exempt!

Correct Tim. Also given that VOSA now work 24 hours and issuse GV9s for such 'major' issues as having small stick on scarves in windscreens I wouldn't want to be stopped and have no MOT and piddly faults.
