This is Krusty the Volvo. It belongs to a friend of mine - it's his daily driver, but we used it to compete in the Scumball 3000 rally earlier this year. Aside from a slightly grumbly wheel bearing, it didn't miss a beat throughout a journey that began at Arena Essex Raceway, down to Dover, across to the middle of France, up through Luxembourg, across to the Black Forest, four laps of the Nurburgring, up to Amsterdam, through Antwerp, on to Calais and back to Essex again. ;D
It's as minty fresh and clean as you like (aside from the black bonnet that was painted with a broom). So comfortable too - perfect car for continental cruising!
Here we are on the Nurburgring - you can see that the Porsche behind is struggling to keep up!
I managed 13m40s - not bad since there were four big guys in there with all the camping gear! Managed to hold off a 205 GTi for a couple of miles but I think that was more down to their questionable driving skills than anything else...
Applying the official rally stickers here.
And here we are at Arena Essex Raceway! (Seen that episode of Top Gear where they race camper vans? Yeah, same track.)
Stocking up on essentials.
Bumped into a fellow Scumballer at some random French services - he's run this XE'd Shove-it 3 years in a row.
Phil pretends to fix something. Nobody believes him. These don't break.
I was so staggered by the reliability of it that I went out and got myself an 850 T5 when I got home - 225bhp for £500? Lovely. (Needs hitting with the stick, obviously... and perhaps banded steels too, what d'you reckon?)
