Sorry to flood the board with questions but.... Is the 8v 1800cc engine in my Audi 100 similar to the engine found in VW Golfs and Passats? They look the same in pictures but there could be issues with mounting lugs, gearbox bellhousing bolt holes e.t.c that would prevent them being easily interchangable. I'm only asking as the Audi lacks power and feels a bit tired which isnt a problem but Golf engines seem to be pretty cheap, even tuned ones. It would be great to have a few extra horses under the bonnet.

1.8 in a 100 = S L O W. You definitely need to beef it up any way you can.
Also = engine wearing out quickly. We had a carbed version that was on it's second engine and that was smokin' like a good 'un when we got it. It had to work far too hard to drag a lardy Avant around. Had a tendency to go sideways braking in the wet too.... didn't keep that one too long!

70bhp from 1.8 litres is dismal! Must be more than that, abvout 90 or so. Remember the injected version is 112bhp.

Jeez, they did a 1.6 version!
The engine range comprised the following engines[9][10]:
Audi 100:
1.6L I-4, 75 PS (74 hp/55 kW), carburetted (1982−1987) 1.8L I-4, 90 PS (89 hp/66 kW), carburetted, later fuel injected (1983−1990) 1.9L I-5, 100 PS (99 hp/74 kW), carburetted (1982−1984) 2.0L I-5, 115 PS (113 hp/85 kW), fuel injection (1984−1990) 2.1L I-5, 136 PS (134 hp/100 kW), fuel injection (1982−1984) 2.2L I-5, 138 PS (136 hp/101 kW), fuel injection (1984−1986) 2.2L I-5, 115 PS (113 hp/85 kW), fuel injection, catalyst (1984−1987) 2.3L I-5, 136 PS (134 hp/100 kW), fuel injection (1986−1990) 2.2L I-5, 165 PS (163 hp/121 kW), fuel injection, turbo (1986−1990) 2.0L I-5 Diesel, 70 PS (69 hp/51 kW) (1982−1989) 2.0L I-5 Turbodiesel, 87 PS (86 hp/64 kW) (1983−1988) 2.0L I-5 Turbodiesel, 100 PS (99 hp/74 kW) (1988−1989) 2.4L I-5 Diesel, 82 PS (81 hp/60 kW) (1989−1990) 2.5L I-5 TDI, 120 PS (118 hp/88 kW) (1990)
You were very close with 90BPH Mr B, turns out its 89 breakers. Ok, but not great. I bet the 1600 version wasnt very popular!

there was a 75 BHP engine with 1,8l and carb, possibly only available over here.... look out for an Audi 80/Passat engine with the code "DS", that's 90 BHP and though not really fast, it has some torque and drives nicely even in the big Audi...
