I was born a pertolhead in 1969. By the age of 6, I was helping dad to fix his car! At the age of 17, I became a full time practising petrolhead.
Hope ya like!
My 1st car. Solid as a rock & bought for £350 back in 1986. I did a few minor mods to it. It always sat far too high though
The next one previously belonged to a local lad called Gaz. It was always admired by the local boy racers, probably coz of the way he always ragged the fooooking tits off it AND it always sounded wicked!
When he fitted the skirts, the jury was always out as to weather they looked right or not.. It still always turned heads though.
I eventually bought it for £550 in 1987.
Next is a 1 old boy owner 1300GT with 28K on the clock. All standard and original. I payed approx £600 for it in 1987. From the day I bought it, I always wanted to drop it over a set of Lotus steelies & 185-60's. I never had the money to do much with it though. Sold it for a small profit soon afterwards. It actually showed up on the bay 2 years ago. Now with 8ish owners, mex wings, 1/4 bumpers, black mex spripes(!) & RS alloys. Still had the early bus type 3spk steering wheel. The mint Twincam type seats had been robbed though.. I tried contacting the winning bidder a couple o' times but got ignored. :?
Next after a horrible brief encounter with a 1275GT mini was a V reg biege Mk2 1300L. Hated it. I stupidly payed a dealer far too much for it. It had been biven a wonder waft and had grouchy big ends. It didn't stay for long.
In 1989ish, was my 1st taste of a little oooomph. After being stung with a couple of shitters, I became educated regarding what to look for in bagging a decent solid bargain motor  After looking at a lot of Cappers, this mint 1978 2.0S turned up for £1200.
It was my pride & joy for quite a while. I stuck a big stereo in it. I always wanted a set of 2.8i alloys for it but at the time they were too expensive
After crashing the 2.0S  and a subsequent bodged repair. A very rushed buy resulted in the form of an horrific carbed XRwee. Shed or no shed, quite probably one of the worst cars I've ever owned. Pictured here with my mates minter than mint Fezza XR2
In 1990 the replacement for the completely toilet XRwee was an RS2000. (i can't belive that Ford replaced the RS2000 with such a curse word car. No wonder decent RWD Fords have become so iconic)
This was my long awaited 1st taste of a real car. It had previously passed through the hands of a couple o' mates. A year before I bought it, it had been a rotten but mechanically good 2.0 Mk2 Mexico with mint roll top interior etc. A very good yellow RS2000 shell was bought from a well known but now defunct RS breaker oooop north(can't rember the name).
After the re-shell it was sold on again and got painted. Then I bought it
I fitted brand new headlights, had some RS alloys refurbished/mirror polished, did a few minor bits n bobs. It then went straight through an MOT!
After 5 weeks of very happy motoring, I took it to the RS national day at Stanford hall and parked it in the carpark area. Whilst having lunch back at the car, a group of lads admired the RS & enquired why the clock/pod was missing. After pointing me in the direction of a trader, they decided they would steal my car. I was absolutely heartbroken. After some intense detective work by myself, the shell was recovered in Wolverhampon 4months later. The pics were taken after the car was recovered and rebuilt.
I sold the RS a year later. It was never quite right the 2nd time around. After having no luck searching for a good/bargain 2.8i Capri, I ended up with this 1982 2.0S Capri sat on 8" Alleycats 8)
Soon after, I p/ex'd the capper for this Mk2 Mex. It was Riveira blue which was very unusual for a Mex. It was a very straight & sound car. This one had also been nicked previously and robbed if its wheels & seats. On the day of the pics, I had been watched & followed home. Luckily the police were tipped off & I was notified of a pending theft. We left he car out on the drive and a few of us waited up all night for the thieving fookers to show up. :beat: :beat: They never did show..
In 1993, I searched long & hard for an RS Turbo or XR4X4. Having no luck finding the right car, I ended up with a facelift Audi 80 Sport. A departure from the blue oval but still a lovely car
After 2 years with the Audi, I ended up with an 84 blue/silver 2.8i Capper which I didn't get on with. So I bought this little Chevette off a mate. 2 owners+ not many miles. I ran this as a spare car for 3 years. It was one of those bomb proof cheap as chips motors. We went everywere in it :ykt:
After buying my house in 1996 and spending some time doing up slightly damaged write offs etc, I decided it was time to get back into Escorts. I doorknocked a nice looking 1600Sport. I think I payed £1200 and got a free rotten Mk2 Mex in the bargain. I busted the Mex for spares. The sport was a solid 3 owner car fitted with RS2000 running gear. The motor was a little tired so I bought a very fruity 2.1 pinto out of the local free ads for £350. I pulled off the sport stripes, fitted 2.8i billies, lowered it and threw on a set of 7" superlights which was a fairly rare thing back then.. It ended up being a nice car.
Next after another break due to other commitments was a couple of Anglias. The blue one was a good rolling shell which got stripped and sold. The red one came as a rolling shell also. I fitted a 1600GT engine/box from a 1600E. My mate Paul bought that(the same guy who recently painted Grampy Smudgers white Anglia) and restored, painted it blue/white & fitted some milton bits.
Another tawny Mk1. This came and went within a few weeks. The reg number ENR191L appeared on an RS2000 replica which was for sale in the back of CF a year later. Its currently on Retrosports two tone purple bubble arched Escort which was featured in CF a while back
Always fancied one of the original Colt Lancer 2000turbo's. This one was a bit tatty. It was modded but wasn't sure what it was kikking out. So had it dyno'd. 185@ the wheels. Standard ones were 170@ flywheel. The best £500 I ever spent
I've always craved a Chevette 2300HS. I bought this from Leicester in 2002. It was £1200. 2 owners, 52k miles but needed some restoration. At the time, I couldn't weld and had too many other distractions so again it got sold on. I think the same car was featured in Total Vauxhall mag a few months ago. It's now been fully restored and has an HSR kit fitted.
In 2002, this series2 1600E was purchased. One owner from new & 70k miles. This had stood outside for years after the old boy gave up driving. He would never part with it. It was eventually sold to us when he passed away. It was all original & had only ever had strut tops. This was sold on to someone down sarf.
This very tidy 2.8i Special was bought for £700 in 2002. It was the very car I'd been searching for a few years previously. Over that time, I'd lost a little interest in cappers.. It had been stood for a couple of years. So I re-comissioned it, cleaned it up and sold it for a nice profit.
I door knocked this 2.8i special. It was very cheap & got broken for spares..
... and when advertising the bits in the free ads, a guy phoned and offered me two more 2.8i specials for free :smilieguys:
