Hi
I have been thinking about doing a road trip around eastern europe
I currently have a 1983 Mk1 Golf GTI and a 1966 Alfa (which is up for sale)
Would the Golf be a good choice, or should I try and buy something newer and cheaper?
I don't want to be stuck in Latvia unable to get parts!

Bah, I'm driving to Croatia in me imp (hopefully) at the end of summer.... just take as many spare parts as you can and be prepared to do a fair bit on the roadside!

Yeah, right, you won't get the parts for Golf in Latvia because everyone drives Flintstonmobiles there, oh, and they also eat swans and wear fur hats.
There are a lot of breakers, garages and yes, even official VAG dealers (encircled by machine guns and barbed wire to protect from bears and locals). And there's a separate Golf racing class too in case you wondered for mk1 and mk2.

Take somthing east euro as the Mafia will steal anything "western" ;D .Just kidding,do alot of checks on the golf before you go and as stated before take some spares.Try to find common faults that can go wrong on the golf before you go and put them right or take appropriate spares.I'm planning a trip to Germany but i think i will have more of a headache with red tape

Why not fly out there, pick a big city and buy something there for the trip? Polski Fiat 126 perhaps or Zastava 750 Trabi?

me and my friends did a trip to istanbul in a £300 BMW E34 we bought off ebay with naff all clutch and disturbing rattles. I took some spares but the only 'spannering' we did was to rip the back box off the exhaust when it fell off Have fun, and give it a good service.

I would say go for a skoda. Cheap as chips over here and the Eastern Europeans will be used to seeing them if you need any repairs.
