Hi, sorry I know there have been a lot of threads along these lines, but... I'm sick and tired of driving a Mk2 Polo every day, it bores me senseless. The grand plan is to buy a full size late 60s yank to go with my Porsche 924 track car, but I need a different daily. I need something around a grand that can do 30-35mpg. I can't drive my Jag XJ40 anymore because it does 21mpg I'd love something 60s or early 70s but not a lot comes in my economy/price bracket and I also want something reasonably quick. I do about 1000 miles a month. I thought about a Saab 900 Turbo or a 2CV. God I'm so lost. Any ideas?

Volvo 340 driftarz. (I don't like the funny pedals though).
MG Metro. If there are any left.
2CV (well, I have to mention it and you already have!) although even I'd admit that the noise/flappy doors can get irritating on a commute and you'll struggle to find one that won't fall apart for that money these days. Boo!
Triumph Acclaim. Or Dolomite. 1850 would be a top choice. Overdrive for the mpg/easy cruise win.

I strangely quite like the Prelude - strangely because usually J stuff is off my radar but that's why it's great you've suggested it.
I had an ovlov 240 2-litre efi last year Hairnet. Good in a soggy, slow way but i never managed more than 25mpg, which was a bit rubbish

I never got with the whole Volvo thing - had a 264 V6 but never really got along with it. Didn't help that the propshaft tried to vibrate the car to pieces at anything above 2000rpm. The chicks liked it though ;D. I'm liking the Saab Turbo idea personally. Capable of silly power for not much outlay.

Nissan Primera GT. 150bhp, bulletproof, cheap. I'll even swap mine for for your jag if you like!
I've been badgering your editor to run the GT in the budget blaster series for months but he just ignores me these days.

My mk2 Polo is up for sale.... Yeh yeh yeh hear me out! 10 months T&T, does 40mpg every day, is lowered 70/40 with some nice stance, just had two brand new tyres, nice comfy bucket seats inside, looks different but still retains practicality. Not fast, but definately fun! Best of all... £600 to you sir. So thats £400 to spend on a dashing set of wheels to finish it off.

Your selling it? Didn't you sell it before? Make your mind up! ;D
My suggestion: Scirocco. I bought mine as a practical runabout that was a little bit good looking. Turned out to be quite a fun car. Now that mine isn't running rich, it gets quite good MPG. Couldn't say exactly how much, but a tank lasts about 2 weeks with small mileage in the week, but quite a bit at weekends.

OOO, lots of suggestions, I didn't think of Dolomite or a Scirocco. Anyone know what mpg a Dolomite driven normally (read enthusiastically) does? Sorry Keithyboy, a Primera isn't really me, but I will slap Will round his bald head and get a buyers' guide done on them. Acclaim, Metro aren't really my thing either. Perhaps Adam we could sell your red 89 saloon Polo with my red 89 hatch Polo as a job lot? A Polo for every occasion? I'm thinking Saab, Dolomite or maybe Scirocco so far...

Saab Turbo is very tempting. I've been lusting after a jag for months but I can't help thinking a 900 or 9-3 would suit my needs better.

Would a Ford Capri suit your needs sir? I'm liking the idea of a Rocco but they are starting to go up in price it seems. How about a subaru impreza wagon? They are going seriously cheap.

Rocco's not much fun on the motorway in my experience - sounds like it's about to burst into flames, and probably is

LPG is the answer. I get the equivalent of 30 MPG from my Cadillac Sedan DeVille....

OOO, lots of suggestions, I didn't think of Dolomite or a Scirocco. Anyone know what mpg a Dolomite driven normally (read enthusiastically) You'll get well into the 30s, provided it's healthy. My 1850HL when it was running as per factory settings nudged 40MPG once, cruising at 65 on the motorways.......and that was an auto 4 speed manual overdrive will be the one you want...Like this! (Can vouch for this one!) cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRIUMPH-DOLOMITE-1850-HL_W0QQitemZ160249415671Again, a decent exhaust, new filters, a good tune, new NGK plugs, 'sports' coil, new HT leads and good oil will get the best out of it - or for even more, electronic ignition such as the Luminition optispark, or Magnetronic. Lots of tuning bits out there for them! They held the class win for the Shell economy run at some points, I think - averaging something like 45mpg (with a tail wind, anyone? ). Some inspiriation from my old'uns: A well-sorted 1850 is a quick car in it's own right, especially with a few gentle tweaks and massaging! Extremely comfortable as well, especially when commuting. Nice torquey mill too - so if you drop out of OD and punch it, you won't be left wanting when it comes to mid range and overtaking, which others might infuriate you with... If you need any help or guidance, feel free to ask
