Who was it on the MiniClassics board that was having a pop at the Beetles in the run up to Mini Vs. Beetles??
"Yes there are a lot of extreamly quick beetles adout at the strip ,but an even greater number of slow one too, apart from the obvious advantages of there layout there ability to increase engine capacity and HP is evident when you can bolt on bigger barrels and pistons ,the few beetle owners i have spoken too in the past [top runners ]inform me that the standard origional casing can be increased to 2.5 litres and make over 220 hp and turn to 9000 rpm ,having seen these beetle engined [as we regard the A series] run i know they have got this drag race lark truly sorted out .The ones that run 9-10 sec 1/4s are very often later Porsch engined ,up to 3.3 litre and 550 hp but these are as much Beetle as Pete Edwards vauxhall space frame is a Mini, but even now there are a number af A series steel bodied minis running similar times ;ie in the 12 sec brecket."
How many times do VW people have to say it PORSCHE ENGINES DO NOT FIT STRAIGHT INTO BEETLES. There is very little point doing it anyway as the added weight counteracts a lot of the horse power, money/effort is better spent tuning the VW engine.
Oh and Richie Webb runs a street legal all steal VW Cabriolet that'll do a 10.88 second quarter mile. Drives it to the circuit, takes it down the strip on slicks, drives it home
Although you may not see a huge ammount of the top runners form Vw drag scene because "problem is, that minis vs beetles is always run on easter monday, and thats when easter thunderball" oh and track isn't hugely popular either.
Me,.. I prefer corners.
