Not that I'm ever going to own one, but I was running "cars I'd like" round my head and I settled on Series Landies for sheer amusement-factor. The only thing is, with a petrol engine they sound like an economist's nightmare. I know there are common Diesel swaps, but are they a bolt in job? Or does it involve lots of messing around/expense? What about gearing - they strike me as being woefully undergeared for road use even with a petrol engine - what are they like with an oil burner under the bonnet?  |

1) 'series' 2.25 4-cyl petrol & diesels are remarkably similar. Lots of stuff is interchangable.
2) the 2.25 diesel is really, really slow. The 2.25 Petrol is just slow. There's really not much in it in terms of economy: 19mpg on petrol or 22mpg on diesel is equally frightening.
Bosh an RV8 in it on LPG, and hurl in an overdrive unit and you're halfway to acceptable performance / running cost / non-deafness.
(RV8 = 15-20mpg, overdrive makes 60mph cruising do-able, if you are brave enough as the steering gets 'a bit vauge' (understatement) at national limit speeds.)

Ive heard of another diesel conversion tho rarly done now tho as its quite expensive so am told
buick 6.2 V8 diesel

you can fit a 200 tdi but it has to be out of a ninety I fitted one to my 58 s1 70 mph ++ 30to35 mpg with rang rover diffs n over drive (oh and I ran it on chip oil lol ) its worth gathering the bits and doing it in a weekend the biggest problem realy is makin the exhaust as to the last post the 6.2 eat diffs n shafts for fun too much touque don't like umm

Does a 200TDi not necessitate having 'series 3' type headlamps in the wings?
I thought that it was pretty tight on a SIIA as Ahd posted in the pic.... ?

pog i uesd flatter backed 7" sealed beams from the scrapyard on the S1 got the extra space for the rad and used a pajero intercooler ontop of the engine

Go for the 200Tdi its one of the best diesels i've driven for a while.I've had my Defender 200Tdi for a week and a half now and i can't stop driving it,bags of torque and frugal too.Also runs on chip fat aswell ;D

2.25L NA Diesel is the same block as the 2.25L petrol so is almost a direct replacement but is slower and you'll only get ~2mpg as stated above 2.5TD engine from an early 90/110 is (i think) the same block so should also fit in easy? 200TDI can fit for ~27mpg 2.4L VM TD engine and 5spd manual from an early diesel rangerover should fit? if it does ~28mpg 2.5L NA Transit Diesel engines, theres a recognised conversion but they're rancid nasty engines The Perkins Prima engine is usually the 2.0TD engine as found in a montego estate, they're very good Also, Perkins 4108 / 4203 / 4236 NA Diesels all fit, Milner probably still do the gearbox conversion plates I have a range rover with a 4236 in it at the moment and it's seriously funny.. the 4236 is 3.8L NA, about 85bhp/125LB/f In my range rover it does between 28 and 35mpg, top speed of ~65mph.. that's with a standard 4spd rangerover gearbox and overdrive, it redlines at 2750rpm and it's very under geared.. lowrange 1st gear runs out at about 3mph  all the NA Perkins engines are slow, loud, very heavy, and pretty much bombproof, but they're a love or hate thing  |

My old RRC:  Had a Nissan RD28T turbodiesel straight-six in it, with the stock 4-speed and overdrive she'd sit at 80-85 all day and still do 30+mpg. But in a Series LR? No way, it's way too long/heavy, though I have heard of people using the 3.5l Nissan 4-pot which are unbreakable and have bucketloads of torque. |
