This mini makes my heart ache! So clean! Its a credit to you mate, hats off! Thank you ;D I'm ready for that all important first start! I just need to wire the coil to the distributer module - 3pins. Which pins do I use? Coil Positive & Coil Earth? |

Having some serious issues regarding that first start. Unfortunately shes not picking up oil and the pump isnt priming. I'm going to have to start messing about with backfilling to gain oil pressure. I have cranked the motor over a few times, but my battery is weak due to the cold and with the car being stood for a long time, that hasn't helped either. Going to try the saxo battery and crank her backfilling oil at a fast rate! Lets hope she gulps it down and pressures up. I'm at the point where it could be causing some serious damage  I'll let you know how it goes. |

May be way off the mark here....
I built up an A series some years ago and on restart had zero oil pressure.I had fitted a new gasket and done it up too tight.This caused a split in the gasket and an air leak which caused the pump not to pick up properly.
Can't remember the correct torque setting but i know it was very low,less than 10lbs ft.

This is a problem ive experienced many times with several of my own mini's..ensure the battery is fully charged,crank the engine watching the pressure gauge,as soon as it fires and runs which all being well it should,initially you my see zero on the gauge,it needs the engine to run to force the oil around for that all important reading on the gauge..seems like an age but the trusty Aseries will come good...Good Luck..

Yeah, it's a long way to pull oil up. I did two - Both had brand new oil pumps and fresh bearings, I backfilled them both and still turned them over for bloody ages before any pressure came on the guage at all. In the end I just let them start and within a second or two at a fast idle there was plenty.
Just make sure you remember putting the o ring on the gearbox top face for the pickup......

I will not be attempting to start the engine without pressure, in fear of causing damage. I recall fitting the o-ring between the g/box and block. I'll attempt a tow - need to bleed the brakes first though. |

Lund. Hopefully ill be doing the same tomorrow of a first start.
Get the battery charged or able to be jumped.
Remove Plugs.
Prime the pump turning the engine over backwards (Turning it over forward wont prime as it wants to pump out into the oil filter, also make sure the oil filter is full of oil before begining)
Once you have put alot of oil through the pump re-attach everything and turn it over.
On my first engine build it took about 20 secs to get to full psi while cranking.

Well well well, where do I start!  With the engine back out and on the bench, I began stripping the engine to gain access to the oil pump recifying the problem.  I took the opportunity to touch up all of the bolts that had started to rust with some black enamel, certainly tidied it up abit. I might have got a little carried away.  Pressure!  A dodgy batch of Payen head gaskets, lead to this occurance!  Soon sorted that problem with a later gasket.  As she currently stands:  MOT time! ;D She sounds well; |

Fitted my K&N today, she's all ready to be set-up tomorrow on the gas analyser and stroboscopic timing light. I just hope the carburettor tunes up nicely as I didn't mess with the innards as it had been previously rolling roaded and needle profile adjusted. I'll have her re-rolling roaded once the run in period is over.  I have been having a stab at some more bodywork, given the sunny weather we've had recently. My dad has also finally, finished refurbishing the drivers door, it has come out really well considering it was all done and sprayed out in the elements!   Top coat, I also flatted back the fibreglass bonnet and resprayed in vermillion:  My attention was then turned to the sill trim on both sides:   Final result:  It's currently raining now, will get some pics of her in the dry. Wish me luck with the MOT, cheers. Tom |

MOT is now tomorrow, cancelled the booking and had the motor timed and mixture set-up. Need to re-check the washer jets, the motor failed to work when I tested it, so i'm up early tomorrow to sort it out! Whilst the mini was being set-up I turned my attention to the drivers door bottom hinge as the one that's on has a fair bit of play. This one seems spot on, so I have cleaned it up and sprayed it vermillion  I also decided to give my alarm for a scrub up. It probably wont last 2minutes with it being attached to the keys in my pocket, but I'll give it a good coating of paint and lacquer to prevent it from becoming too scratched. I keyed the plastic then gave it 2 coats of putty primer. I'll leave this to harden off overnight (on my heated fish tank! ;D) and sand it with some 1500. I intend on spraying the body of the fob metallic black, and the key chain band (the red bit) vermillion. I hope it comes out alright    |
