This is a little project that I did with my father and brother in the latter half of last year. I've been reading this forum for a couple of weeks, signed up the other night and thought I'd post the picture diary up here!
This ol' gem was traded in at my dad's garage, It had just failed its MOT, so he found a 306 for the lady and she practically gave this to him. Failed on a rusted tank.
We had a brainstorming session of what to do with it - the mk3 polo I share with my brother is a bit of a natomobile:
...so we wanted to go a bit more wacky than that.
I had a quick sketch with a BIC on the back of an old invoice, and came up with the idea of chopping it into a pickup.
SO.
Work started:
^ roof and c-pillars off, sizing up tailgate
^Cut to fit and tacked in place
^closeup
^chop chop chop (that's the ol' man)
^stick stick stick
^nicely adhered now...
^ using the headlining to deflect weld spatter seemed like a good idea at the time
^hairy 'bruv in the back
^Chopped up a second tailgate to make the back of the bed, also put box section in to give it some strength back after the roof chop.
^braces
^Inside cab
^looking' good!
^blank for numberplate recess
^new tank! ;D
^bit of chequerplate for good measure, also MOAR BRACES!
^Inside looking a bit tidier now, bro' made a nice board+carpet cover for the untidy bit
^caps over c-pillar stumps
^Got our hands on some marine ply, jigsaw to fit. Circular panel in center lifts out to give access to spare wheel.
^trim back on inside
^paint time!
^Nice satin NATO sand to go with the matt NATO green mk3
^action pose!
^letting it dry
^mmmm... satin black bonnet, trim back on!
^ and the back. Square number plate because we thought that'd look more "military pickup-esque". That's a new style dub badge too.
^close-ups
We forgot to take the camera to the next couple of sessions, so there's a bit of a jump now. This it pretty much as it is now. Changes include: finished chequerplating bed, satin blacked some later caddy (polo based one) alloys, 'bespoke' (homemade out of 3" scaffold-type tube...) twin pipe system with no back box..., cut and riveted flappy mudflaps and rear arch stone defenders from black rubber, roof rack thing with lamps, random bucket seat behind the wheel.
^those exhausts...
^...were fun to make ;D
^rubber + rivets + sikaflex = win
^even has the wiper working again
^the cockpit
^arty shot darling
It's been used as a runaround by my dad, as I'm at uni for most of the year and my brother is already insured on the mk3. The chair had to go, my dad and I are ~6'2" and there just wasn't enough headroom with it in. There's now a mk3 golf chair sitting in it's place (tenner from the scrappies, not bad). Oh, and the roof lamps have been flipped so that they hang below the top rail, they look much better now imo (less like mickey mouse ears )
