To quote Hot Fuzz...
"It's not an accident, it's a collision"
"Why?"
"Because 'accident' suggests there is no-one to blame"
Now I know that's a film...but did you know the Police now call crashes and alike RTC's, not RTA's.

It was on a motorway next to a slip road. So there *will* have been a camera pointing at it, and the footage from motorway control *will* have been looked at by the police if they were involved. So you need have no worry. Some idiot BMW driver lost it cos they drove like a tit, you didn't cause it, you could not have stopped because (a)where could you park on a motorway alongside a sliproad? and (b)reversing on a motorway is illegal so how could you go back to the accident? Walk across the sliproad from the hard shoulder in the path of motorway traffic? Yeah right!
So count yourself lucky it wasn't you and continue on your way.

...people WILL NOT admit they made any kind of mistake Read your insurance documents. You shouldn't admit fault - it's not your job to decide who is at fault. Back on the topic though, if you witness an accident you should stop, whether you are involved directly or not imho.

Plus you might not be doing the BMW driver any favours either - he might have got it moved/recovered without the authorities/police ever knowing about it, so avoiding any awkward questions... Sorry, am i bovvered? Why should the tax payer pick up the cheque for any damage he caused to the barrier, clean-up costs, etc, if it was totally his fault (as you seem to think it was)?

I'm fully aware of that, but I meant people wont face the consequences of their own mistakes. no-one accepts blame themselves and if the oppertunity to wriggle out of it comes up, they will take it.

Back on the topic though, if you witness an accident you should stop, whether you are involved directly or not imho. But only if it safe to do so. As was comfirmed by the police when I made a witness statement the other week. Pretty pointless being all helpful and causing another pile up.

Hold on there Mr High-Horse! While I totally agree with your point about who will pay for damage etc you conveniently missed off the winky-smily I added at the end of that paragraph that intended to show I wasn't entirely serious

Today I saw a ranualt kangoo van embedded in the armco on the southbound side of the M6 in Cheshire as I was going north, the van was on the hard shoulder with the nose crumpled into the barrier with steam blowing out and the rear overhanging lane one. There was a figure sat in the drivers seat, looking a little bermused, I assume the accident had only just happened. Not one other car had stopped to see if the guy was ok, saying that I didnt phone the police or ambulance....... I'm assuming someone else had, wrong assumption to make really.
People just want to keep their noses clean nowadays, its a bit mercenary but its the way the world works today.

Fair enough I do generally stop to be a witness... last one a couple of weeks ago and even managed to flag down a passing coppers to lend assistance/give my version of what happened. Have always tried to since some old chap pulled out into me then claimed it was my fault 'cos I was speeding* and a passer by told him emphatically he was a liar and would wait while I called the police. * Strange logic when the road was straight and unobstructed for >250m. Unless he was claiming I was travelling faster than light...
