LDV pilots used the 1.9 pug engine in RWD form so get the box out of one of them as they are the old LT77 that used to back up Rover V8's so should be strong enough. The big Volvo's used a VW 5cylinder diesel with a volvo RWD box,if you get something bigger. Older LDV 200s used the ruddy marvellous Perkins 2.0 diseasel lumps. You will struggle to find a better motor than ones of these. Also found in Maestro cars and vans, some had turbos some didn't and as they can be adapted to fit a Landrover rwd shouldn't be a massive problem. lordyoung - Only 850s came with a 5-cylinder diesel, the RWD ones had a 6-cylinder diesel from the VW LT. cavmad - I imagine most running Perkins Primas have been snapped up by LR owners by now! The non-intercooled Rover L-series (basically an updated Prima) will be easier to find, bit more power too.

It's a Polo 1.9 TDI Sport (red D and I). I do 100 miles a day so needed a diesel, having had petrol Polo's I figured it'd be better than dragging the weight of a Golf or Passat about. 70mpg isn't normal though - it's dull as hell driving that slow on the M62/M18/M1. :-) i bet that shifts when it needs, too, i really like diesels in small cars.

Mapped PD130 Polo TDIs are comparable with Mk5 R32's.
Big turbo diesel in a small car = the win (and lots of torque steer)

Another shout for the PSA XUD19 here (that's the pug 1.9TD). i did quite a lot of investigation into this about a year ago.
The LDV that you're looking for is a Pilot, upto 'R' reg (Like what Ed Hall bought in PPC), IIRC. It has a naturally aspirated (dead slug) 1.9 XUD bolted onto an R380 gearbox (the LT77 replacement). These boxes come up from time to time on t'bay - or go to a commercial vehicle breaker.
Should be a dead easy swap - no electronics to speak of on the earlier engines.
Or, of course, there's the Pug 406 (and others) 2.1 XUd - the same block/bellhousing, but a little more power. Of course, the 1.9 is tuned easily enough.
The XUD is an extraordinarily long-lived engine - a batch of slightly modified versions was tested for aviation use, and the first failure (valve stem snapping) occured at 17,000 hours. The aero-certified XUD has a Time Between Overhaul of 12,000 hours- where a Merlin has a TBO of 200 hours, IIRC. 300,000 miles is not unknown from these engines.
