I'm sure I could look this stuff up on 'tinternet - after all thats the other thing its there for after the porno and all that - but that would involve effort on my part and I'm well lazy.... and seeing as this will probably never amount to anything at all....
Seems that most Diesels are like 2.5 TDi which seems to be a little "small in the trousers" to me, even with the forced induction, but I happened to notice a BMW 535TDi go rolling past me today and thought, now thats getting more like the a man's size engine....
So what options are there out there for someone who was looking to get a decent sized turbo diesel which is decently sized package. I mean the 5.9 Cummins TDI used in the Dodge Ram is a great sounding engine and Gale Banks has wound 224 MPH out of one in a slammed Ram pickup but try shoe-horning one of those into a Vauxhall Viva....
How much "technology" is involved in their modern oilburners also?
Hmmmm....

Yeah, I was thinking about them but I bet they are expensive x1000 to buy, maintain and have many complicated doo-dads to go with. Plus I suspect them to be physically large. If I was going very large Ford do a nice 6.4 V8 TDI in the F250

With most modern diesels the ecu's are can networked with everything else on the vehicle so the chances of getting one running without transplanting the coomplete loom and every sub system on the car is pretty slim. Also with the really new stuff your looking at things like particulate filters and add blue for the emissions which means the only real way of using one is stand alone managment. I know Megasquirts can be adapted to run a common rail derv but i'm not sure how well they work. I'm pretty sure that it wont be long before the likes of emerald and pectel realise how much potential there is in diesels and start marketing affordable aftermarket managment for them though.
Why this fascination for size though? what are you thinking of putting it in, an armoured car?

Dunno: maybe a Mk1 Granada, Capri, Zodiac, XJ6 or one of the odd compacty-midsize yanks from the late 70s or 80s. Maybe even a CROWN Victoria or hell maybe a Toyota CROWN...

I'd be going for a 300TD merc lump, the early one with the inline pump and only minor electronic control. Enough technology to make them nice to drive but still easily fixable buy the average hammer wielding grease monkey. Good news for you is most of them came with a nice lazy 4 speed auto attached too.

tunable? Is that a straight 6 a 5 or a V8? It would need to be fairly fast or no point in doing it if you know what I mean.

There should also be a dodge dart with a cummins 5.9 in it somewhere in finland... The ford 7.3 v8 should be lighter and have as much potential. altough there is this one thing that speaks for the cummins... www.nogaroblue.com/curse word/Dieselrods.jpg[/img] ;D

Nissan RD28T Straight 6 TD, as fitted to Patrols.
126bhp & 204lb/ft stock and even more on the later intercooled version, apparently the bottom ends are in demand by Skyline owners because they are nigh-on indestructible.

AK - the '35 BMW lumps are twin-turbo 3 litre I6's. The '30 ones are single turbo.

the current fuel prices have killed any diesel engine swap aspirations i had. mile for mile its MUCH cheaper for me to run a 3L staight 6 senator with autobox on LPG at 57p a letre, that is is for naomis dad to run his 1.9TD manaul gearbox swb/lowroof citroen partner van. on diesel at 115-130 a letre. fair enough if you can run it on veg (and still get a good supply of veg cheap enough), but most of these motors being discussed here are too sophisticated to run on veg. i think ile stick to a 5L v8 on gas rather that a 3L deseasel

Its a fancy thats been in the back of my mind a couple of years really. Bubbles uo every now and then and then nothing happens and I carry on. Sadly, a curse that seems to affect people of our persuasion. I enjoy day dreaming my way through projects, it's much cheaper & easier than getting stuck in doing it. PPC have a bit at the front of the mag where they come up with some good ideas. On the diesel topic, I've fancied a pre '73 W115 Merc with modern turbo diesel power and lots of nice interior upgrades for some time. E34 525 TDS's can be had quite cheaply so could be an option. The ECU / black box situation will be a worry though. A dream projects built in your head thread would be quite a good un! I imagine some genuinely interseting ideas out there....... JB
