Just having a few thoughts about upgrading brakes and wheels on one of the projects and I'm looking to move from 4 stud to 5 stud(but sticking to 114.3 PCD) to reduce other cost within the project. What are the pitfalls of doing this modification that I might need to be alert to with regards to maintaining the structural integrity of the components etc.
Cheers

Umm well the first thing is to check that theres attulay metal where you need to drill the holes. Alot of the time there isnt!

it's impossible to redrill a 4 stud hub to 5 stud, unless you utilise one of the existing holes, in which case the pcd would have to stay the same.
gonna have to have new hubs made or somehow put the hubs off the 5 stud car onto yours

"impossible" is a very broad statement. Unlikely is a better one... ;D I'm sure I've seen it done 4 to 5 lug. Many hubs just don't have enough metal in them to pull it off anyway, you end up having to drill one new hole so close to an existing hole that you risk the stud mounting failing.
Like Kee says most times you either swap hubs over or find someone whiocan supply you with a blank. On RWD cars you will also have the ballache of having to replace the halfshafts to change PCD.

can be done, its what I'm gonna do on my cressida. I know technically it shouldn't be as strong but plenty of people do it without problems. Guess it just depends how you view cut springs, stretched tyres, welded diffs and all the other baby killing car mods?

hubs are round in part because that way they are in ballance as they spin. I have no idea if that is going to cause a problem in use but it kinda looks really wrong to me.

yeah, like I said, it looks wrong but is probably only noticeable if you did some science-like test. plus its close to the hub so shouldn't matter as much?

This spacer/adapter is interesting: It's got a reversible bolt hole!

That's to fit something six stud too - so something quite heavy duty!

I have 4 stud drums redrilled to 5 stud, they are the same pcd though, 4x120 to 5x120 i think, whatever porsche pcd is.
If you sticking with the same pcd you should be ok. Have a look inside and see if there are strengthening ribs in the drum.

Would it not be worth welding up the old stud holes?

extra holes shouldnt make too much difference to strength, unles sof course you have hundreds of em ;D circles are the strongest shape, thats why people spaceframe cars with tube rather than box
