Got the custody of my dad's BMW 525TD (e34) whilst he's away, but last night when my bro was driving it, the instrument pod stopped working. The gauges went crazy and everything started flashing on and off, then nothing. No speedo, no rev counter, no fuel gauge... nothing!
I've checked the fuses this morning in the vain hope that it was something simple, but no.
Anyone know what it could be?!

Two things, one is the battery that keeps all the digi mileometer info gets fubar'ed every few years, or the earth strap for the gauge pod fatigues and stops working. Both need the gauge pod removing, but it's best to go on the e34 forums to sort it out

We had the same fault on our 525. The connections on the pod just decided not to do their thing any more and we had to replace it. Apparently its quite common. Probably the earth strap thing. We just bunged in a second hand pod with the added bonus of lower milage!!

Sounds like an earth to me if they're all going weird at the same time....

Thanks for the replies! Just been down the scrappy to poke around a 525TDS that's down there. Unfortunately some moron had gone about the dashboard with a crowbar and their teeth it seems (don't you hate when that happens to the part you need?!). Managed to get the circuit board part of the dash pod. Just in case it's that, or I can practice on it at least. There are early and late instrument pods on the e34, and this one is the later kind with the digital milometer readout etc. Shall check the earth strap and go from there. Thanks again guys

OK maybe I'm being thick, but I can't see an earth strap . There are a couple of multi-plugs that disappear into the loom... I'll have a better look tomorrow.

OK, the replacement circuit board went in this afternoon, and I'm pleased to say that I'm now able to tell how fast I'm going, how much fuel is in the car and how fast the oily bits are spinning. Only down-side is the mileage reads 254,000 as opposed to 115,000. I reckon I'll have a laugh for a bit telling him we've managed to rack up 139,000 miles in the two weeks he's been away before I tell him the truth. ;D Gonna have a crack at replacing the capacitors on the original board, as I think that is the problem. Then the car can go back to its original mileage. Thanks again for the help, people.

When I get off my and come and get that laptop, you should then be able to reset the mileage to suit I believe! Rysz.
