It occured to me today that we talk about the fringes of retro and more obscure/unloved cars a lot.
What would you say the mainstream modified classics are?
I'll start with :
Mk1 & 2 Escort Mini VW Beetle Mk1 & 2 Cortina MGB

There's a geat artical in Practical Classics this month comparing a Mk1 and Mk2 RS2000. Both pretty mainstream in their day and pretty darn retro now I think!
How much nicer is the Mk1 than the droopy snooted 2!

Morris Minor Triumph TRs Ford RSs
It's mainly the 'bread and butter' British cars that are the most popular here I suppose! Go to any classic car show and there are rows and rows of Fords etc, but hardly any Toyotas, Simcas or Opels (Manta excepted)...

I suppose you could turn up at a Japanese retro show in a Ford or Vauxhaul and be the centre of attention.

That is a good point. I guess its just rarity that makes the non-mainstream a bit more interesting.
Or at least may cause some of the more mainstream cars to have to be a bit more radical to get some attention.

Luckily it also means that you can get parts for rarer cars. Before the internet I had no idea how to source parts for my ZS's (this was mid/late 80's) but all the time there was loads of kit just over the channel. Luckily there still is. This means that if your fancy turns to older Japanese kit you can get the parts from Japan and visa versa those nice Japanese can raid Demon Tweeks for their hard to find Ford parts. What would we do without the interesting net!

Here in Aus the two main cars would be old Holdens and Ford Falcons. They are the top two by a mile. There is plenty of old British iron here as well, but it is nowhere near as popular as the local stuff. We have a fair bit of Yank stuff too, Mustangs are very popular and there are several companies that just import Mustangs.
Ask an American and he will probably give you a list of old Chevs and Yank Fords. It all depends on where you are from.
The old J stuff is not really seen as classic here, except for stuff like Datsun Z cars, early Celicas, Shovel nose Coronas, Datsun 1000 and 1600, Mazda R100 rotary Capella Mk1 RX7 etc, Nissan Cedric, Honda S600 and S800, Datsun 1500, 1600 and 2000 Sports ( Fairlady) and a few others like that. We have heaps of KE70 Corollas, Datsun 120Y, 180B, 200B, etc here and theyare usually seen as a student's first car to kill before they get a decent one. You pick up a tidy running 120Y for around $A500-$A1,000 ( around 200-400 pounds) for example. They are usually not very rusty either.

But they don't call it "Retro" The closest vehicles in use to come close to what you guys are using are, you guessed it, Rabbit, Golf, Jetta and Scirroco(sic)along with early to mid 80's Toyotas and Datsun/Nissan. Throw in a handfull of Chrysler K cars and you've covered the majority I think. Late model would be classified as "boy-racer" from those outside, "tuner" from inside.
