OK, I'm not up on the official model designations but the Mk2 Passat, the one that looks like a smaller VW Santana. That one. Anyway, why is the Glorious People's Republic of China full of them? Are they real VWs, a build under licence deal or just a blatant rip off? here's one doing service as a cop car but they also seem to be popular as taxis Oh, and theres an old shape Audi 100, for which Google turns this up. And a "wrong looking" version of the Mk2 Golf with a boot. Like a Jetta, but not quite. I normally have no interest in anything VW but this lot piqued my curiousity

I always thought they were built by Hong Qi, but I was wrong.
I find foreign, licence-built cars weirdly compelling for some reason...

Someone told me that copyright laws don't apply in china. I'm not sure if they meant literally, or if they are just kindof ignored.... Anyway, I was watching the french version of top gear last sunday and caught the end of a report from some chinese motorshow, where random chinese brands you have never heard of were showcasing direct rip-offs of various modern euro cars. Citroen C2`s, pug 206`s even a ripp of the bmw x5 were there. Most with just slight styling differences and usually with curse word-poor engines etc, although there were some strange hybrids with the front from one car and the rear from another, or 4-door versions of stuff that is only 3-door here etc. The wesite is playing silly buggers just now, but might be worth a look later.... www.turbo.fr/automobile/actualites/enquetes/voir-les-photos-des-europeennes-vendues-en-chine/photos.jsp?id=t2_916715

Someone told me that copyright laws don't apply in china. I'm not sure if they meant literally, or if they are just kindof ignored.... The latter I think, hence why most moody designer gear comes from China. That's really interesting about the copied cars! I've seen the crash-test of the Chinese Frontera (dunno if it's licence-built or ust a copy). The crash was scary - instant death at anything above 10mph with a steering column through the face. *Goes Googling for counterfiet cars...*

The green one is a complete rip-off of a Toyota Scion xB.
Don't forget the Chery QQ as well. GM bought one for evaluation, mixed and matched the parts and found it could build a mongrel that drove perfectly out of Matiz and QQ bits.
Why the curse word anyone would want to copy a Matiz is beyond me, but where there's a will....

Why anybody would buy sh^t from a country aiming nukes at you, denying basic human rights to its people, wholesale ignoring IP rights, threatening war over Formosa, and subjugating Tibet is quite beyond me. Car design is the least of concerns.
They can't even make a safe toy for your kids, why would they care about your motor? When I say "they" I mean the repressive retards running the country not the ethnic Chinese as a whole, who are wonderful. But their gummit sucks donkey schlong big time.

The Chinese just make what there told at the price there told to produce it, curse word Tibet they started it anyway in my eyes and as for everyone else in china life has never been better.
If you have a bit of get up and go about you the streets are lined with gold in china.
Chinas not the only one aiming nukes why is it all right for America and us here in the UK to do it but not china, there just protecting there interests.
I support china fully and while build quality is not the best they’re not doing bad considering they got a late start compared to everyone else.
Perhaps if our government was a bit more like China and actually had a spine (stricter not communist) then we wouldn’t have hooded mask-wearing youths beating up old ladies, and we defiantly wouldn’t have an immigration problem
Besides it looks like everything is gonna end up being made in china, Piaggio’s Italian right? well sort of apart from the fact that most there scooters and parts are now made in China

Nope, no streets lined with gold. Just tanks. The one kind of motor the ChiCom gummit seems able to build with competence. On the aiming part, see, you're in the UK, mate. That's why it's OK for the UK to aim its nukes back. If the ChiComs started spending military money on purely defensive needs, that would be one thing. But all these fake BMWs and fake Citroens are financing the largest first-strike aggressive military build-up since Uncle Joe.

That pics older than me now Chinas just not like that anymore, any way its about time somebody stood up to the US.
China has no real beef with the UK so we need not be worried and at the end of the day china would not dare start a war because who would they sell all the stuff to if they started shooting nukes at everyone.
China is the future and as soon as the US admit it they will become the world strongest country so they must be doing something right, and they do care about the people, the Chinese government has spent billions of dollars over the last 10 years on increasing the standard of living.

Well I would feel a bit sorry for the innocent American people but if any government needs sorting out its yours, bush seems to think he can prance around the world starting wars with anyone he likes for false reasons.
This is what I never get it’s perfectly all right for one country to act in a certain way yet for another it not WTF is that all about??
You have a bloody action movie star as a key government figure FFS!
A lot can be learned from china there not trying to be a direct threat to any one just to secure there future, a strict government has its plus points for instance crime is low in china, rape is low in china, drug use is low in china the US and the UK can not claim this.
American people are great they are what make America what it is but unfortunately your government makes you look like the village idiot in the world wide community and also make you in to the biggest target for any terrorists or country that wants to start a war

He's just the spokesperson for our senate. Every country's government is corrupt in some ways though.

Don´t agree with Norn that often but am on his side this time. Unfortunately what started off as a intersting car thread is turning very political. However, although my impression of the Americans went down by miles when they re-elected Bush it seems they´ve finally woken up and are on the way forward. Is it me? but why can´t i help thinking that PAC 1982 is not in England but is one of the thousands of Chinese government hackers sat in Peking!
