Well after over 4 years of ownership it's goodbye to SWMBO's Quantum in a couple of weeks: So I've just won a nice SAAB 900 Convertible on eBay for her, she has wanted a SAAB for a while: It's the 16V FPT so should have a bit of 'go'. ;D Just need to pick it up now as it's at the other end of the country from us. I'll post some more pics once we have it here.

Hi Kirsty, I remember seeing your car when we were at the South Shields meet over Christmas, that was when we were starting to think about getting one. I think you and Carole had a bit of a chat about them at the time. She can't wait to get the car home now ;D

Cool car, do like the saab classic convertibles. Just careful with the gearbox.

Cool car, do like the saab classic convertibles. Just careful with the gearbox. I did read on the SAAB forums that the gearbox can be a bit fragile. I've already pre-warned Carole to be careful with it (for all the good it may do). Perhaps I should start looking for a spare now Did your 900 have a broken gearbox when you got it, or am I thinking of a different car?

yeah that was theone, but it was running 21+psi of boost.
Main thing is to use good gearbox oil and to keep the level topped up, and not nail it in first really. As it's the actual flex in the gearbox casing that kills it, from what i've heard.

Great interior! Want a 900 again. How much did you pay for yours out of interest?

Great interior! Want a 900 again. How much did you pay for yours out of interest? Just under £2k for it. I looked at a few convertibles, some people wanted alot more for cars in worse condition. Obviously a tin-top would have been alot cheaper.

Here's a picture of the convertible I used to own. The problem with the gearboxes is that they've nearly all done more than 100-thousand miles and they start to wear out after a while. Combined with original advice from Saab to never change the gearbox oil and a powerful turbocharged engine and you're in for a bit of trouble really. But they're not as bad as Rover boxes and some of the Ford boxes are a bit suspect as well. I'm just rebuilding a gearbox for my Saab 99 (they use the same type) and I'm hoping it's going to work for a while... depends on how good my rebuilding skills are. I'll be gutted if it breaks after 200 miles.

p.s. - seen that guy advertising Saab 900's on eBay for years. Did he only have the one car there when you went to collect or were there another few sitting around as well? Can tell by the way the car is photographed... always does it the same.

p.p.p.p.s.s. The leak at the front of the engine could be gearbox oil leaking out from the front of the primary drive case. There is a cover held on to the front of the gearbox with a metal clip. If you remove the clip that holds the cover on then the cover will either fall off or can be eaisly removed with a narrow flat-blade screwdriver.
If you look at my gearbox rebuild picture above you can see the small round cover at the bottom left of the picture and the hole it fits into is on the part at the top right of the picture.
There should be a rubber seal between these parts. If the seal has any grit in it then it won't seal well... because it's only gently held in place with the metal clip there is not enough pressure to seal around a peice of grit or dirt and the cover will sit slightly open allowing oil to leak out.
The other possibility is the engine oil cooler. It sits under the front nearside bumper and has two hydraulic lines running between the cooler and the oil filter housing on the side of the engine. If there are any leaks in those lines or the fittings where they attach then the oil will either drip straight down to the floor or drip onto the hydraulic line and run down the line until it gets to a 'drip-tip' and then fall to the ground. The oil cooler could also be leaking...
Those are the likely leaking places at the front of the engine bay.
