Hey all
having longings for an e30, but not 100% sure at the mo as don't know if a rot free, reliable one is doable with my budget
316 2-door preferably (for fuel reasons!)
Anyone got anything interesting?

Don't bother with a 316, the potential increase in economy is so tiny it does not justify the pathetic performance. Early 316's were carb equipped too: the Pierburg unit they came with is a right pile o' droppings and really not very efficient. A decent 318i will be yours for not much money if you keep 'em peeled, and would provide at least 'adequate' forward motion. HTH

I didnt realise that a 316 was an 1800 anyway, just a detuned version.

I would have thought the injected engine would more economical, though its got to be a 6 cylinder if you're doing it properly

I would have thought the injected engine would more economical, though its got to be a 6 cylinder if you're doing it properly I disagree! 318is > 320i, I'd even take a 318i over a 320i for economy reasons. 320i has not really got a good reputation since it has the economy of a 325i, but none of the poke. At my age of 22, I also prefer the insurance on 4 pots - £1000 for a 325i, no thanks!! I've bought 4 E30s now, three were road legal T&T (318is £350, 325i touring £300, 318i (m40, injection) £300) and one non legal (318is £100). I thought I got some good deals. I was selling that 318i intact with MOT, but stuffed engine bearings and clutch thrust bearings for £150 with no biters. The only serious rust I've encountered on an E30 is on my dad's track day 325i saloon (which he bought for £200), which is an earlier pre-facelifted chrome bumper car. I have heard of E30s with serious rust problems, but all of mine seem to be fine but they are all the later G to H reg cars. Theres a rumour that tourings have better rust protection. Hope that helps budget wise, look on ebay for bargains since three out of four came from there. www.e30zone.net is a good forum, but you won't find a cheap one for sale often. Cheers

Found a 2-door saloon for sale near me in white - its a 316 but with pretty high mileage (150k), and i think its an injected variant.
Right colour, right amount of doors, pretty good price, we will see.

150k is just run in. I'm certain my brother's one is now a long way past 200K.
