Could someone tell me how to search for a cars registration number so I can tell if its still on the road or not? I'm sure someone here can help. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers Skinley.

try ebay, start a sell a car auction and enter the number, gives more info than the DVLA site but again you need to know the manufacturer

Not exactly a number plate search, but www.askmid.com is always good for checking whether your car is on the motor insurance database or not.

does anyone know how to trace a reg to an address? only I know of a couple of 'abandoned' cars I'm interested in but can't seem to find out who owns them? when a mate of mine worked for a windscreen firm he could go into a program and find the address of any reg?

To find that information out you have to fill in a form and send out to the DVLA. It asks you the reason why you want to know, but I got sent the details for one no problem

you can buy the logbook from dvla for abandonded, fill in that you never got the v5 off the previous keeper/lost etc. i have done it over 10 times, and got the v5 for the car, they were all cars in spain that were abandonded at the airport by brits who couldn't afford to live in spain anymore. that is how i got my beloved lhd vw golf gl on a j registration.

Bit of thread resurrection but I've found the following to be useful for uk vehicles. These will give you basic details like make, model, engine size. AUTOTRADERMY CAR CHECKINSTANT CAR CHECK Use the data from these to check more details on the DVLA site or the MOT history site. Most of you probably got to grips with all this ages ago but maybe it will be of some use. If the vehicle you are searching for doesn't appear on the top three then it may be worthwhile trying a simple google search for the registration number.

Theres also this one (amongst others i'm sure) that gives details of personal plate transfers over the years www.cardatachecks.co.uk/Just be aware some of the free checkers are using old data, I (finally) got a fuel type changed and got a new log book a month ago, now showing correctly on the DVLA site but its still showing wrong on some others.

Is there any way to find out the vin? I have just been offered a Rover I owned years ago however the gent used the part of the scuttle with a part of the vin on to repair his and has no paperwork( And no I don't mean to ring a car) I imagine the car is as good as scrap if the vin cant be identified.

I'm a MOT Tester and the only way I can get a VIN from a Reg is ask my friendly EuroCarParts guy to check it on his database...... It works most times!

You cannot log on a car to test it without entering the VIN. If the VIN is not clearly visible then you can't test the vehicle. SIMPLES!!

How do you go about vehicles built before August 1980 if the VIN plate is missing. It not a legal requirement to have a VIN plate before that date. Do you rely on the fact it might be stamped somewhere and if it is unreadable, its a failure?

Do you rely on the fact it might be stamped somewhere and if it is unreadable, its a failure? you use the dropdown box and select 'not required' when asked for VIN or look on the V5c or the previous MOT ticket, I've had several cars tested with no VIN on the car.
