The hemisfear is unreal but i really like the two latest ones from Chrysler and GM. I think you've pretty much covered the lot there! The prowler was a rip off of Foose's original hemisfear design was it not?

That Holden is gorgeous! I am not normally a rod fan, but that looks really sweet! Rysz. It's basically a friggin copy of a 49 Merc with slightly more pronounced sponsons is all. AK posited the Merc is a "custom", not a "hot rod". And yet it was included in this thread. (!) I call it a "hot rod" even if NSRA don't! Pre-49 is just an arbitrary date based on model changeovers in Detroit. The hotrod attitude and ethic didn't change from 48 to 49 or anything.

blackhawk defintiely counts, and it was well remiss of me not to include it. 455 power. Yum. Norm, someone rattle your cage this mornign The Efijy is a rework of a Holden FJ, hense the name. Someone pointed out to me recently that all cars of that era look the same anyway!!!!

uggghh!!! Chainer wagons,not even retro styled. All were concieved on corperate budgets by committees of 'stylists' . Real Hot rods are built by real people ,not by cheque book weilding wannebes who have just migrated from Harley or late model mustang ownership. Hot Rod... me and some friends in 1976 concept car...not Hot Rod. BTW it looks to be a 26 Ford model T shape . this a 27 Chrysler Roadster 'hot rod' ,thats my mums sister and brothers in the 50's.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

I can see where you are going with your statement, but while I also agree in part I'm going to disagree in a larger part.
Two guys in GMPD built that '34 Chevy coupe. (OK, they have a hell of a lot of resources to call on mere mortals or even the Chip Fooses etc. of this world don't but hey). I don't hold that just because you work for a major automaker means you can't be a car enthusiast too. In fact if you work for GMPP or GMPD or a similar team I'd say being a true full on car guy is the only way you'd have got the job. Competition for those jobs must be mega. I've met guys who worked in the preservation departments for manufacturers and they have a passion for it. These companies can hire anyone. I'd sell a kidney to get to play hot rodding all day for pay.
OK, its a bit "full on" and in places alittle gimicky, but plenty of the current generation of rods are lke that, even the home built ones. And while its a very different beast to a home built rod its just unique. Where else will you find that level of detail and quirky shiit like a 525 BHP 2.2 litre turbo Ecotec powering it running on ethanol? (can I just say 525 BHP Ecotec 4 pot again for anyone who missed it the first time around). And its booked to drive the Power tour in '08. GMPD / GMPP build these things to be driven more than justinto and out of exhibition halls, which is more than some of the "independant" built top end rods and street machines ever do. Including ones which are owner built....
I have issues with $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ builds and "look at me" gimicky styling but I reckon that the E85 coupe at least works all round and I like that a major car maunfacturer will commit the time and resource to build it. Its an inspirational car.
The Chrysler roadser is, as you spotted very closely based on one of Henry's products. The tub started off as an XLT, they are an all steel unit based loosely on the style of a T but larger dimensionally (see how they did the clever name there, huh?) and I'm pretty sure its on Deuce Factory or similar rails. But its cut up enough not to be just another T, there a hell of a lot of very nice fab done there (Chrysler subbed the job out to Wheel to Wheel rather than building it in house I think I read somewhere) and I don't think its as "whole" a car as the Chevy but theres some cool detail on it and again, I think its cool that a manufacturer recognises theres a market to appeal to with a car like this.
