Over the years I've had many mates who have gothed out their cars. Despite my being a dodgy goth for many years this has never really appealed to me as the end result is usually horribly tacky. A lad I knew called Jason (goth name = DJ Sin - see what he did there?) had a minty blue Chevette saloon back in the day and painted it matt black with "christian death" down both sides and the bones crucifix thing on the bonnet. Only he never marked it out first so when he did the passenger side he ran out of space and so it read "Christian Deat" on that side. The interior was retrimmed in kinky black PVC like the interior of a plush fetish club. OK, no it wasn't, he glued black bin liners over the existing cloth. But we knew what he was after. Luckily the vomit wiped off easy. It featured every kind of plastic or chromed skull, coffin or dangly black rubber bat on a string you could thing of, and while we all took the pish mercylessly he still pulled in it and it was a well known local ride until it died. It also did sterling service as partybus between Nottingham and Manchester's Underworld club. This was then replaced by a Volvo 164, but I never saw the finished job on that one. Perhaps just as well. I like 164s. I've also known a few white Minis to have "eyeliner" drawn round the headlights and graveyard schenes painted on transit vans etc. Theres a moderately famous '57 Chevy with a ali bat wing on the bootlid and purple flames with features many coffin and vampire items to goth it up. See, told you theres no taste in this. I even used to know of a lad who was "somethign with computers" ran a purple Lamourghini Diablo with some crushed velvet interior retrim and a large ceramic coffin set into the centre console to use as an ashtray. Many goths just use old heases and paint flames or bats or whatever on them. I've known a few Mk2 Granadas and even an Austin 1800 Landcrab done that way. well, anyway, I was up at Whitby for the Gothic Weekend (which sadly is no way as cool as it was when it was in its hay-day but I digress). There was a good selection of goth rides parked up so here's a few for your edification. '84 or so Buick looks like a Superior or something. Mk3 Granada Not sure if this is an SVA approved Skull? inside,, much dry ice, fake cobwebs and lighty-up-glowy-skull jobber Calibra is not excempt from the undeadification Clean W123 might actually have been still in service, I snapped it at the dedication/memorial for Sophie Lancaster Now this Scirocco is something special... Notice the purple velvet trim etc. Also notice the apt shopfront refelcted in the window. Nothing to do with goths, just a local shop with a suitable name.... J-Van with pagan mural Mk2 Granada conversion And this crazy contraption appears to be home made and based on a Vanden Plas Princess. note the Rolls Royce lump under the perspex bonnet I'm sure I have more (analogue) photos elsewhere from my dodgy past - luckily few crimes against automotive fashion being perpetrated by me. But plenty of mates and bands and people who should have known better. I'll see if I can dig any out and add them on here.

Hehe love the 'goth look' I have a link to a website at home which is american and devoted to the goth/hearse cliche (I mean crowd) Some very cool cars in the line up that's for sure. I do have a friend who's in a well known swedish goth band and he drives a new Saab.. not quite goth.. Mopre importantly, I think I should start the 'hair metal/waynesworld/grunge' look... Ripped denim seats and faded van halen doocards anyone?

Especially the 35-year-old ones who roll to Asda in hearses. Wierd. Just seems 'well rubbish' to me. LMFAO! Not darn R LoCal, shurley? Did he wheel spin out of the car park or did it turn into a bat and fly off?

I really want a goth-look hearse but the wife isn't keen. In fact, she is VERY against the hearse idea despite me suggesting that it'd be a great way to transport our bicycles. No fair!

Are goths afraid of lowering springs? I guess they must be jusding by both the Calibra & the Scirocco (which would be orsum if slammed and de-tatted, the mural can stay.) I must say, I really have never 'got' goths. Especially the 35-year-old ones who roll to Asda in hearses. Wierd. Just seems 'well rubbish' to me. lowering springs are mechanical mods. mechanical mods are tricky to acomplish when off your nut on poppers. IME Goths are generally only motivated by getting off ones nut on poppers, or seeking the hairspray with the ultimate hold. De-tatting the VW or whatever would be wrong for scene. Like no roof rack on a rat dub, or no fat rear rubber on a pro-streeter. Its entirely about the accumulation and display of tat. The more tat the better. Most of these cars are deeply horrid as automotive styling excercises, but most of their owners are not in the least bit interested in cars. Its a fashion accessory. As indeed many "scene" cars are.

or seeking the hairspray with the ultimate hold. You need to see the episode of The Mighty Boosh 'Nanageddon'. 'Hairspray made from the tears of robert smith' I've never really been keen on hearses. I like the old carriages, they're cool or is that too retro?

I am a little bit "goth" meself, I never goth up the car, but have owned hearses and the usual luxo barges, personally I think me merc is goth enough without any add ons especially when its over filled with us lot bound for a night at a fetish club lol
Tis called the "Count Mercula" by most of em, although its known by various mates as the "Smirk" or the "Bismark after it was sunk" or "The car that just wouldnt die" :S

Its interesting how quick you can go from 'murdered out' to 'goth' with the addition of a skull of some sort.

I would say "murdered out" is almost the oposite end, the idea there seeming to be as sleek and as unadorned as possible. Or at least, so I've always taken it to be.
Mind you pics of that Lincoln from Maralyn Manson's video is called for about now...

* warning, I'm aware that this is a ridiculous discussion about sub-niches-of-leftfield-modifications-of-obscure cars* I think if you take a murdered out car you have a good basis for a quality goth look. Or if you approach doing a murdered out car, but do it with rattle cans and cheap wheels you'll end up with goth look
