Not quite a other modification (YET) Bought this yesterday, will collect on Friday. Comes with full house, incl ABS, Computer, and a bunch of other nice stuff. Unlike Harley Davidsons, not much chrome, but twice as much potential for modification, and this is where I will have some fun. The other thing about these bikes is that you can truly do 500mile day and more, getting off at the destination without being a cripple. R1200GS

No fair, I love them beasties! What plans have you got for it? I remember someone on one of them riding round the outside of me on my ZXR at a trackday.... Awesome machines! As for 500 miles, pish, I did 1000 once on my old ZXR750H1 and felt fresh as a daisy at the other end (Caen ferry port in France to Florence Italy via Milan!)

Nice, but aren't they quite awkward/complex in the maintenance dept?

I'd have thought the opposite (could be wrong though!). No fairings, covering the bits of engine you need to get at, fuel injected, shaft drive etc.
Are they still aircooled too? (I'm a bit out of touch with BMW technology!!)

Aircooled yes.
Very capable on the track, and known to run around sportsbikes in the bends.... top end goverened at some silly low speed like 210km/h
Maintenance , fairly simple, the new ones are more complex and may be the end of the breed with continueing legislation against polution etc.
Lot like Harleys, without the chrome, and noise, but owners still pimp up in many ways.
To me more of a intercontinental mile muncher.

Did 130 miles yesterday, at mostly uneconomic speed and style.
6.5litre/100km consumption.
I do like this bike.
