I got a rover 620ti Turbo with an idle problem. its too high. It sits at 1400rpm and will eventually settle to around 800rpm if its left stationary for long enough, but if you prod the accelerator it will sit back at 1400rpm again, process will repeat each time. I have checked the throttle cable and spring return. I was thinking throttle position sensor? I have head that sometimes the ECU can get 'confused' Its the wasted spark type engine so has no dizzy cap and that. Any thoughts on ths are appreciated. pic of engine bay

The idle as far as I can remember is set via the ecu. In our case it was an overactive stepper motor playing silly sods. Other than that I don't know.

Maybe an air leak? Although I wouldn't have thaught that would be intermitent.... easy to check anyway though to eliminate it

Idle control valve would be my favorite if it has one and it's likely that it does
Failing that an air leak after the throttle body can do this too but the idle wouldn't return back down to normal so find the ICV

Had a look and cant find an idle control valve - I did check for leaks and all seems well?
its doing it as I drive along like the thrttle is open as if I go up a hill the car continus to 'speed up' even though my foot is off the pedal? how strange?
I going to change the coolant temp sensor if I can find a rover parts dealer nearby.
other than that I don't know?

Turn the ignition on. pump the acc pedal 5 times. fire it up. see if it helps. this resets what the ecu see's as closed throttle position.
coolant temp sensor is probably the easiest/cheapest to try. failing that its probably best to get it plugged in. getting the stepper set up properly will do it the world of good.
Idle air control IIRC is all part of the throttle body. (the big alloy contraption with the multi plug just above where the boost hose connects.
