My dad has said that when I've passed my test (i know its 2.5 yrs but you have to plan ahead!), i can have a cheap car (under £1000). I was thinking maybe a VW polo mk1.2 or fiesta mk1/2.
When Ive used it for a year or so and I have cheaper insurance, the fun begins!
Introducing the wonderful world of BECs! Fit a Fireblade or similar engine in the front, using a chain to the diff (with a sprocket bolted on), and the bike exhaust manifold and custom exhaust system. All electrics and stuff would come from the bike, aswell as the airbox etc.
What do you guys think??

Sounds like a good plan - drive like a saint for a year or two to build up than NCB. Personally I think a Mk1 Fezza is a way better choice than a Mk2, but that's just me

orrrr and bare with me on this one, orrr just don't tell them your modding the curse word out of it, risky but you also feel good knowing you are curse word them for the time being and beating the system.
polo would be cool, just strip the curse word out of it and make that little engine work

That sounds like a very good plan after all that is exactly what I plan to do with the micra . I've just hit 19 and my insurance has already dropped from £1600 (17 just passed) to £550 (19 1 years ncb). In the summer I plan to buy a suitably retro 4 door saloon to smoke around in, then put the micra back on the road when I go back to Uni in the winter, hopefully by next year I will be able to afford to run a decently powerful retro car. Then the micra can become a project, current plans are a 1.3l 16v from the later bubble micra fitted with super bike carbs and suitable euro styling.

we have a good system here, it is called "third party only" it doesn't insure your own vehicle , but covers the vehicle you hit. There is an excess which depends on age but covers you up to about 5million ( I always thought you would need to wipe out an oil refinery, but these days it has reduced to a 4wd with a half full tank). My poilicy for my bus is $140 per year. That is about 45uk pounds.

Micra? is that a nissan?,i have a mate(leigh Russel) who races a suzi hatch on the salt lakes in south Australia..thats the little car about the size of your micra,he drives it from Brisbane to the lakes, that's about 3 days full on driving, then proceeds to set world records in his class,800cc at 120mph. he was running two engines, one with a turbo set up he made himself, and a homemade fuel injection setup,One is the spare engine and sits on the passenger seat when he's going to and from the lakes. ;D.It's about a 1/2 hour job to swap them over. Something to think about

I'm emigrating. ;D We have Third Party Only insurance in the UK, but the trouble is the insurance companies have realised that people would take that as a really cheap option. Consequently a lot of insurance companies offer TPO insurance at something silly like £1 below the cost of Third Party Fire and Theft. So they pretty much force you to pay through the nose.

Adam That's basically what Hotwire suggest I'd do last week here - grab a cheap Polo from the Bay, strip anything excessive off it (trim, noise deadening et cetera) and throw a Gixxer or pair of Ducati v-twins in there. Mmmmm....nice. *n

for my renault it was actually cheaper going for fully comp insurance than third party as third party fire and theft was £1500.00+ (third party only was £1300!) but fully comprehensive was £560 for my ren 19 1.4 hatch. (not fantastically retro but i like it so i don't care!) so is worth checking all options guys

It's a good idea, but I doubt you'll get insurance, I'd say go for a mkI Fiesta or a tidy old Polo, and maybe tune the engine that's in there a bit, but I strongly doubt you'll get insurance on a superbike engined one. Besides, once you've done that you'll have to uprate brakes, suspension, and various other things including the interior, wheels and tyres, so that brings up your insurance again, and will you really be able to afford all that when you're just a greasy student like me?

I strongly doubt you'll get insurance on a superbike engined one. True, but do the insurance people really need to know?! OK it's a bit reckless, but all of my cars have been "Standard" as far as the insurance companies are concerned.

Rev 9 - What's insurance like for (G)imps? I'm really after something not-too-ordinary but 1200 quid quotes for 'cheap things' are irritating me - anyone do mega-cheap or classic insurance for owners club members or 21 year olds?

I know what you mean, but they could always void his insurance if they catch wind of it after an accident, sounds a bit risky considering the work and money he'd be putting into a project like that, if it got damaged and he got no insurance money it'd cost a fair bit to start a similar project again surely? Penski - Insurance is quite reasonable really for Imps, remember they have sub 1 litre engines as standard, and you should be able to get classic insurance. It does depend model to model obviously, the Stiletto, Californian etc coupe models, plus the Husky (estate) and Commer Imp van are a bit rarer, so the insurance ought to be a little dearer on them, but still reasonable. Plus, it's not really connected, but you will be able to save yourself a bit of money with some Imps, since loads of them were built before 1973 you should be able to get yourself a tax exempt Imp if you look around a bit. I'll have to dig out the paperwork etc to tell you what I'm paying, but it's nothing ridiculous all things considered, it's a modified car and I'm fairly young (under 21). I know what you mean about cost, my Imp's reasonable, but when my brother was recently going to get a 1400 Vauxhall Ashtray to drive about in, he's a young driver as well, and he found that it would cost him more to get insurance on that than it would for a 2.3 RWD Volvo! Ridiculous isn't it? (It was doing him a favour really, the Volvo is twice the car a mk III Astra is, but it still defies all logic!)

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

If you don't tell the insurance company about mods and are involved in an crash then youre not covered. If you cause the crash and the other driver has serious injurys the money owed to him could run into millions Think I would rather pay the extra and tell the insurance company everything.
