Not especially retro but bear with me please... Like a lot of people I've been a bit miffed by the cost of fuel and being a fat smoker with zero fitness levels I decided I should do something about it. So I bought this... Yes, I know I should have a pedal version only but I'm asthmatic on top of fat, lazy and a smoker (very bad combination of course). Anyhow plan is to use it to get to work on and give up the fags at the same time. Ideally keep fit and save money, I'm going to write down how many miles I've done and how much I've saved on fags and see how long before the bike pays for itself (£375). Now the thing is I've always enjoyed driving and I see it as my right to do so if/when I like.So aside from obvious health issues, have I done the right thing or have I copped out and done what our wonderful govornment seem to be trying to force people to do? *Quick edit: I also do my bit by running on vege oil in my old Citroens so I can enjoy driving and not throw too much money away in taxes. Have a picture to compensate for lack of retro topic..

TBH - I'm cycling a lot to work too - it ain't too far. I'm not fat( yet ) never smoked and no asthma(ouch!) - but it is actually easier and I get there quicker! No cop out at all - if people got off their a*ses, convinced their kids to cycle to school ( obv. where practical - say 5mile limit ) then this whole world would be a better place etc.. etc... Nothing wrong with it fella - power to the pedals. I still love my cars and driving - but everyone needs to give a little...... [dads army mode] or we're doooooomed I tell yer - dooooomed [/dads army mode]

but I'm asthmatic on top of fat, lazy and a smoker (very bad combination of course). You're not fat mate! have I done the right thing or have I copped out and done what our wonderful govornment seem to be trying to force people to do? Very good question. I don't know, but you are doing right. I cycle when I can be assed (currently 4 m, soon to be 1.5), reasons: - I see little point waiting in traffic with dawdlers, dangerous agressive people, mostly driving cos they can*, and don't look at alternatives. - It feels good to get to work with blood pumping, most of the time less stressed than driving, healthy - the only conscious exercise I do, for now... - oh and its cheaper innit, roll on summer. * Freedom to do what we want its great, I love driving but commuting is rarely fun.

Jumping on a bike (a 3-speed old style retro-ish one to aim for some on topicness) was terrifying for us last summer. Good grief does it feel dangerous! It's clearly been too long.
Has to be a good thing though. Too many short journeys are done in cars when they are blatently not the best tool for the job. That's the reason I made sure our new home was a good 25 miles away from work! ;D

have I done the right thing or have I copped out and done what our wonderful govornment seem to be trying to force people to do? oh and to revisit this again, I fear by actually deciding to run a old small engined small car, I gave into the pressures of tax forces slightly. whats worse is I'm thinking ahead of other small engines for future installs, to save costs/taxes, and possible future outlawing of big engines. Course my current priority is pouring any savings made into pushing the V8 build forward, and using it as much as I can for fun while I can. So not really given in to em just yet!

I save the environment by swanning around in an old Merc! ;D
It's a toughie but I can just about cope with the comfort and waftability. We all need to make sacrifices!

..., have I done the right thing or have I copped out and done what our wonderful govornment seem to be trying to force people to do? feck the gvernment and feck the environment imo, but getting out on a bike is a good move purely for health reasons. Ive dug out my old mountain bike for just that reason. Its shocking how unfit I am now. I'm 30 and am pretty much dead by the end of my road (its a chuffing steep hill though) whereas when I went to school, I used to cycle there, 3 miles each way no matter what the weather.

I don't take the "feck the environment/government" approach. I want to be less wasteful, that's my motivation. That's why my petrol car does good mpg while my diesel runs on waste fuel. The bikes were perhaps a step too far as we're too unfit to ride them any distance! We're working on that though.

I usually cycle to the next town to pick up car parts, but don't do that out of choice, its just that the car is usually dismantled so i cant drive to get the parts ;D

I'm trying to contribute to another good summer by driving a 6.6 litre pickup lol I occasionally cycle in the summer (14 hilly miles each way - takes about 15 minutes longer than it would by car), and I generally feel good when I've done it. However, for general commuting, my motorbike sees most action - half the time of the car
