2CVs are rubbish in an accident. True? Well, no actually. This one rolled twice after being smashed into broadside by a BMW 3 series that came through the central reservation on a dual carriageway. It spun and rolled at least once, possibly twice. My friend calmly got out to go and remonstrate with the BMW driver! He was trapped in his car which just goes to show that bigger isn't always better. Accident was a few weeks ago but I held off posting the pics up until the insurance was all sorted - surely record time! No lasting damage to the owner but her poor 2CV is a write off. However, they have got the car back so some spares will live on. Doesn't really bear thinking about to consider what would have happened if the impact had been slightly further forward but the light weight of the 2CV does cause it to bounce away from the scene of an accident.

i wondered if this would make it over here I have to agree with your point, she was lucky, it could have gone very differently, but it doews show you can have a big accident in a 2CV and not die horribly like people always say you will.

Lucky lass. Was that taken with a Polaroid? :s How do you manage to crash on a dual carriageway anyway? Crazy BMW drivers. That wreck reminded me of the 2cv in Top Gear.

Tri - my thoughts too! No 747 involved here however. Just an unremorseful sod in a Bimmer.

Very interesting, though its not a fair test as the 2cv had a bull bar. ;D Seriously very interesting, its held up very well and allowed escape too. being able to bounce away makes sense here. in the truck sandwich vid we are used to seeing, the energy was concentrated to a crush with the CV stuck unable to bounce away. I suppose its dangerous out there. Full stop.

I have a theory that there's something of a safety arms race going on at the moment. Could be completely wrong but the extra weight of the safety features means that all the other cars need the extra weight which means the 'safest' have to be even heavier and so on. For example two Minis or 2cvs at 40mph have a lot less stored energy to disperse than two modern Escorts.
So for example what proportion of the safety features of a vehicle is used to counterract the weight of those features?

Good point Madmog.
I'll add that I know a 2CV is still not the safest form of transport and if it all goes wrong, there are better places to be. However, I think this shot demonstrates that you can walk away from a really bad one if you're lucky - and it comes down to luck in the end - whether you strike the tree a glancing blow or hit it head on, whether that loose object in the back of the car comes forward and smacks you on the head etc.

That driver was just extremely lucky, I would have put money on that being a fatal accident just by looking at the pics. 2CVs are still horrendous in accidents!

2CV's are rubbish in 'some' accidents.
I actually think head on or up the back end direct you are laughing, either the full length chassis takes all the impact or you bounce away as has been mentioned above, A chap known to myself and dollywobbler was hit by a honda civic just over a year ago, impact speed quite high both vehicles doing at least 50mph and the front right wheel took the impact of a honda civic that had lost control on a bend, result, one bent 2CV BUT no injuries again (they did have to free him from the car though) basically its all about dispersal of energy.

i don't have anythign to add that hasnt already been said
except...
I'm just sorry someone has lost their retro through no fault of their own. just shows you can be the safest driver in the world then a bmw comes out of no where and destroys ur pride and joy (even you if your unlucky)

A lot of accident survival is down to luck, so what Slater says is true about point making.
However, I will gowith one point anyway! When I did my work experiance back in 1987 (ouch) I was privvy to some then unpublished current road safety data whcih came from a couple of sources in Europe. One was a "proto-NCAP" system which rated cars A-E. A was safest and E was deathtrap. As a current production car the 2CV was rated and it was not in the bottom group. People think they are unsafe because they look like a garden shed. They were safer than a Sierra, Escort Mk4 or a couple of other cars. The Reliant RObin also did better than both those Fords. I remember looking them up because I thought they were a bit of a joke at the time and I knew people who owned Sierras and Escorts.

I was in an accident that resulted in the death of a mate's 2CV back in about 2000-2001ish. We hit a bint in a Mk3 Polo that pulled out across the front of us (making a right hand turn) while we were going down a dual carriageway at 40ish. The front end panelwork was pretty much gone but we were all absolutely fine. Wish I had photos now

Reliants are remarkably solid. Here's why... Glassfibre is very good at absorbing the impact too - by disintegrating!

We've had this clip before, but it seems after a little reading that its this bits that let the old retro Fords down in the test
