Ive killed my last 'normal' digi camera so I'm back to using my phone again, ive been thinking for a while of getting a digital SLR summit like a canon EOS but I'm in unknown territory so what advice can people give?
its just summit for me to play with, taking pics of cars, bikes, boats and anything else that takes my fancy
I'm not so interested in the latest gadget more what would do the job for me atm, so second hand is the pref option

I use a Fujifilm S7000. They're available used on Ebay for pretty cheap and takes a lovely picture. It's all in the lens, to be honest. And with a 2gb compact flash card in it I can get 1200 pics on it! 6x optical zoom is very helpful too. Obviously you can spend a lot more, but if you're on a tight budget it's an awesome camera.

Do you really need an SLR? Because a 'bridge' type camera like a Canon Powershot, Olympus SP-series or Fuji S-series will most likely serve you well if you want something as flexible as an SLR. If you want something sturdy though, a DSLR is probably a good idea - I dropped mine (an Olympus E-410) 6 foot onto concrete recently, it still works fine and the only damage I can find is a light scratch on the lens body.

I use a Canon 350D, you can pick them up on ebay for reasonable money as they have been superceded by the 400D.

And the 450D is out now! Don't forget to lookat the Nikon DLSR as well, a mate of mine has one and it was a fair bit cheaper than my 400D.
Its horses for courses really, you can get really nice pictures with a compact if you buy the right one. My wife has a Vivitar and its a cracking little thing, Vivitar apparently make the sensors for a lot of the compact manufacturers so you are getting a "branded" camera for a "made in hong kong" price. I bought hers and it was like £180 when a similar spec Sony or Nikon or whatever was £250.
Don't buy one with a lens the size of a pin prick.
I would buy one from a camera shop (or at least try them out there) and find which ones have the astest focus and take speed. I bought a Vivitar ultra-cheepy compact and its got like a 3-4 second delay between pressing the button and it taking a picture and thats useless for anything but inanimate objects. My old Kodak compact was 2-3 seconds (got worse with a larger card in it)
Some of the bridge cameras are almost as fast as DSLRs
I went DSLR because I want to be able to swap lenses, use other accessories and really get back into this (I was a photo club kiddie when I was like 13, 14 with a film SLR). But unles you are planning on dropping another grand or two on accessories what you get with a SLR kit is only the same as a good bridge (or very good compact) camera and costs more to buy than either of them.
I hear nothign but good things about the Fuji compacts, although I've not tried them. A mate has a really nice Casio he paid like £100 or £110 for., RRP about £130 IIRC. Slim and it takes very nice pcitures.

I've got a Canon ESO 20D that I payed lots for a couple of years ago. It's been awesome & still going strop about 30,000 shots later. Can pick them up for £300 ish. 8.2MP & I've done all sorts from weddings to rallying, inc front magazine covers. The 400 & 450D have higher resolution now & are excellent value. Can't really comment on Nikon as I don't use them, but from what I've heard they're equally as good

Slightly different but I can highly recommend the Canon A640: www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-A640-Digital-Camera/dp/B000IH440M/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1204300753&sr=8-1Fantastic piece of kit, slight SLR style body and it does have an adaptor ring to accept tele and wide lenses if required. 10 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, rotating rear screen so you can flip it out to better aim your shot, all sorts of abilities. Has full manual controls as well for focus, ISO, shutter, all the business, so you can use it in a 'professional' style, if desired. Can't rate mine more highly! Get a set of Energizer 2400mAh nicads and a wall charger (15 quid on Amazon as a set) and they last for absolutely ages, at least 600 shots if not more. As an added bonus, takes great video & sound as well!

I don't want another compact, I want summit I can slow the shutter speed and summit that wont break so easily Any decent point-and-shoot will have full manual controls. DSLRs aren't indestructible. They may be made of sturdier materials, but take the lens off and the mirror and sensor are right there. They manage to get covered in rubbish regardless of how careful you are, and are incredibly fragile so annoying to clean. Unless you want to get seriously involved in photography, get a 'bridge' compact instead. They have pretty much the same functionality as a budget-level DSLR and the lenses have a zoom range you won't get with a factory package DSLR without extra investment. There's also the time wasted and shots missed whilst swapping lenses to take into consideration.

I use a Nikon D80, and I couldn't be happier, though with your budget, a high zoom camera (e.g. Lumix FZ range) would be a lot better than an slr - but you'd still be stretching it, second hand might be a good idea if you're not too proud.
