I think this may be the first "Tell me about" thread down here but since it's well off topic for the main board and it's on topic for the bike threads down here I figure it's worth a go.
I have a problem. My commuting weapon of choice has no brakes. I ride a ratty as fsck nondescript old MTB as a solution to Oxford's bike theft problem - as long as it's locked up there's always something in the same rack that's more worth nicking. The problem I have is that I can't adjust the V brakes any further at the front. The cable is simply too long. If that sounds weird, I'd better explain. These are Shimano brakes of the not very expensive variety and they have a "Power modulator" - in reality just a spring in a tube - in the cable, probably as an attempt to stop stoppie junkies like me from locking up as we use the Shellgrip to its full advantage. I think I've stretched the power modulator spring so it's too long, now my cable's too long.
So... What do I do? Is the spring necessary? Do I go to the bike shop and ask for a Shimano front brake cable assembly complete with power modulator or is the power modulator completely unnecessary and can I just fit any old front brake cable?
