GPO 746 - proper old school phone!

haha i want one too are they hard to re wire to work on modern phone lines etc i bet most kids today would'nt know what to do with one

Cool, these were annoying but i miss them I mean buttons, digital readout, so you can remember what numbers you actually punched in amazing really!

I have some 80's ex shop button phones, really can't be assed to fix or rewire.

Tim great idea, making my shop phone into a mobile would be awesome WTF, specially using it on a bus!

Easy to get most phones woking as the BT wiring has not changed for years, its just that they now have BT Sockets on the end of the line cord and way back in the 60's I think they where hard wired in.

There are only 3 wires all together but most modern phones only use the 2 live wires ( pins 2 and 5 on the plug & socket but the other way round), how ever ones like the one above will probably need #4 conecting on the plug to #3 on the socket as this is the "ringing line".

damn, I've been looking for one for a while, they still work in Australia. My dad threw the last one away in our house when we got dialup internet back in the early 90s

I confess, I am a BT man, or should I say Opereach as we are called now.
It was British Telecom when I first joined and I was given a Morris Ital......it was junk!!!
The thing is, apparently the speedos were not the most reliable when you were driving it, er, flat out. Some engineers claimed to see over the magic ton and some, like me could barely get it over 90.
I then got a brand new H plate Maestro van, which was updated from the earlier ones, that was a blindingly good van, quick, handled well and was very comfortable.
I then went through two Sherpa box vans in as many months, they were quite the worst van I have ever driven, torture, pure torture, they made commer vans look brilliant.
After that I got a single wheel base Tranny box van, which I'm proud to say I had off the clock caning it down the A12 one day. The petrol Transits were very lively on the single wheelbase but uttterly gutless on the twin wheeled models.
The latest Vivaros, which Ive got are quite good to drive, however the new ones just out have all been governed down to 70mph, which is total tosh.
At least ive got my unrestricted one for the next five years........

I picked one up off Ebay a couple of years ago for the "Pimp my Riley" display I was involved in, seen here in position with the sophisticated ICE install.



I would quite like to turn it into a functioning mobile* to either carry around London with me or (more likely) to use in the old trailer tent during camping trips. In the mean time my daughter has taking a liking to making imaginary calls on it


*I don't have the knowledge to do this however

Apparently the green ones are the most desirable? My Mum & Dad used a cream one up until very recently (its probably now in the loft somewhere I guess) As far as I understand you should be able to just plug one in & away you go - my parents reluctantly got a touchtone phone as most (read all) Call centres pretty much require them.

Used to be hugely frustrating dialing the wrong digit after getting through most of the number There was also quite a technique since it didn't like it if you dialled either too fast or too slow ;D

moulded gold plastic covers trimmed with gold flock and edged with brocade lush...teeny teeny pen mark on handle otherwise great condition...
