I had another BMX the same as the one that I chopped before that I fancied doing another project on. I got as far as cutting the rear stays off completely then lost interest. In the meantime I seem to have been assigned a y10 to look after while I teach y7 on a wednesday afternoon. He's going to college next year to do a farriers course so wants to get some experience with heat and metal. He's been doing some bending and twisting and some brazing and gas welding. But just playing with bit of metals a bit boring so i've set him up building up the bike. He has reshaped the bar where the rear stays join so that they can be welded onto the tail of the top tube, and gas welded them together as well as i would have managed. Here's the pics, Next week i'll get him to make a template for the tubes to infill the lower arms of the stays and get the pipe bender out.

It's been out and about a few times since then too.
DGTTM may have a point, the previous bike was bent at the top of the stays not cut and re-welded so would be much stronger, even though my mig attempts at the bottom were shocking!
The lad who welded the above is a complete novice and I'm only one step ahead so we are both learning as we go along but as soon as the bottom is welded up too we'll load it up and see how it fairs. If it rubbish it can always be cut off and tried again. Its for cruising after all, not landing from single story leaps!

So let me see... You bought a small 1980s Lancia on eBay and received a teenager instead. I hope you gave negative feedback.

Nice one mate! Should look really cool when done, love your last one. I'm trying to go down the cheaper route with mine but it should turn out OK!
