yeah, I'm into me pushbikes too ;D rebuilding my '96 m-trax as I need a spare bike incase my daily dies and I love the geometry of the thing. my parents got it for my 16th birthday, I loved it! looking sad for itself it hasn't had a wash in a while! check the crud! basically the chain is forked, the mechs have more play than partypoker, the headset's goosed, the brakes are rubbarsh and the shifters have had it. stripped her down the other day didn't take long LOL! gave a stage one degrease but needs at least one more its getting the donated xt v's from my daily and alivio STi's, some tranz-x bars in matching purple and a host of bits from chainreaction. bits! awaiting a headset, grips and seat. my daily- in offroad mode on holiday looks like this tonight complete with sexy 8" discs. thats 203mm! hayes hfx-9's, £60 a pop, how cheap! I love this thing, I've spent hundreds on old snotters to commute and that aren't any fun at weekends that last about 2 months and I was sick of it. I was going to spruce the 'trax up then but I saw this frame and fell in love with it its a fire-eye fire sky chro-mo "urban assault" frame and it rocks. runs a manitou sliver 100mm fork with lock out, hollowtech cranks, xt/lx mechs. one way to dispose of near £800 I'm a bit unhappy as tonight on the way home from work I binned it turned off the mainroad at full pelt in top gear avoiding traffic and the front end hit a slippery bit. front stepped out, me=passenger nursing a very sore knee and elbow... damage. you can see the the grazed grip clamp and brake lever in this shot. lucky it didn't hurt the brake lever too bad. also been picking up parts for my old school mongoose BMX. i've had that longer than I care to remember. its a mongoose california frame and fork, nice flatland setup. currently on some burner mags, mx1010 brake, sugino opc (bent) with a mint exposure gungirl cd! remember them?!?! no pics as its in the shed but heres some nice bits its aquiring- NOS blue acs boa's, 150mm OPC, nice short ruption RDX stem. holy early/mid nineties batman! 8 piece fishbone bars and fishbone x-ufo gyro. matches the boa's just the ticket for flat. mayeb another day you can see my other bikes, but for now I think thats enough

Poor old dude. soz to hear of teh commute spillaz. virtual grapes are better than mouldy squashed ones in post! ;D Hey good your still well (RTA's can be horrid) and enthiusiastic about ya builds. The M trax should make a top daily, no? leaving the other for weekend assault. Top stuff anyways and the BMX is looking out of this world.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

re-an- thanks for the virtual grapes, but i prefer them fermented ;D thrasher- post some pics! I'm jealous already! i had some bmx's that I were out of date way back, but are getting collectable now. few stylers, burner, an awesome race puch, an aero race frame and fork combo (really loved that thing! eliptical fork blades and triangle/egg shaped main tubes. snapped it ), a tran-am twin tube frame that I snapped the headstock clean off and some more! perry- I thought it might be, but its a 1" version. it looks to only have a teflon bushing, but it does come to bits so if it does wear out it'll get some carbon thrust pads or something. if i get an 1 1/8 version I'll have to hunt out a KHE catweasel to go with it

started to put the 'trax back together. new pig headset ('cos they're cheap ) fitted nicer than the one in my fire eye. on new tyres (wtb allterain-a-saurus), new sprockets in the rear, my alivio sti's from the fire eye and new da-bomb holy sh1t grips. i really rate these, damn good value. and I have a question regarding xt v brakes. the return spring ( arrowedfingered) has no tesion on it. i noticed the rear was like it on my fire eye (makes the brake drag) so swapped to discs, but have found that all of them are like it. I thought it had snapped but it appears not. there is a light return spring but thats not enough to return the brake after its applied. the thick return spring should be be tensioned, right? but i can waggle it about to the end of its travel encountering no resistance. and the adjuster runs out of thread before it does anything. I'm confused any pointers

normally that spring has a tension adjuster as youve said. now, on the tension adjuster it should sit in a little boss which sits on the V brake post, it should have a small pin on it that sticks out 3 or 4mm and goes into a hole on the boss on the fork or frame. theres normally 3 holes in the boss on the frame fork to adjust the tension depending what type or brakes and pads you are using, if you undo the main bolt on the V brake arm and pull the V brake out a little you should be able to see it. i think the top hole gives more tension and the bottom less. it may vary from frame to frame however, but i think these were built to some sort of I.S. all my bikes now have discs on so i could be wrong.....

"I'll have to hunt out a KHE catweasel to go with it " green machine , kingsteignton ( newton abbot , ask robinxr4i if he can pop over ) has one in chrome , I'm not sure if they would sell it though but its now run by toby forte so he might want rid regarding the brakes all shimano vs of that era had that problem . pull the spring past the knob on the alloy arm and pull it out a bit ,pop it back and itl now have more tension , job done my m600 ( lx ) is the same and ive used that technique since 98 ;D

too many bikes! if I saw a catweasel cheap I might have a punt tho... these xt v's. the pin is in the centre pin hole on the frame as per insructions but has 0, as in no, tension. you can freely move it through about 30 degrees like the coil part has snapped doesn't look it tho. I'll have another bash another day and bodge the things, they've only done 100 miles! cheers all

oh isnt it just and ive got to walk to work in an hour its easy , pull it over the retaining bit ( also the best way to set toe against the rim ) , pull it out about 1cm - 1 inch once the slop is taken out youl get a feel for it theyve probably lost tension if they were put in the uppermost hole on the mount and the pads worn right down screws are just for ballance

holy cr@p! an update this is the pivot arrangement on the back of the brake. the pin pointed to with an allen key is the end of the return spring, its free floating in relation to the adjustment device, the outer plate nearest camera. the spring end should touch the silver ring shaped part on the outer plate to get tension, but it sits far the other way and won't get tension until you wind the adjusters all the way in. this small spring is whats been returning the brakes up until now. thanks shimano big thanks to perry for the tip on bending the springs ;D works a treat now I've bent them through 20 degrees!!!!!!!! all lovely and back together. the forked chain has taken its toll on the chain rings and the new chain skips. I have ordered some new cranks and sprockets which are here but lazy ass me hasn't fitted them yet. end of updates

no squeaks here ;D little rub over the rim with panel wipe every couple of weeks seems to keep 'em quiet. took it for a blast today. god, i'd forgotten what its like to ride a rigid bike! fast steering verging on twitchy, huge ammounts of control, lightweight and chuckable. it begs to go fast. if you're in the saddle it wants to be pedalled faster and when you've done that it wants you to get up and start pedalling even faster ;D here it is with a new FSA RPM crankset (£20 with chainrings! thanks CRC!). and gratuitous double shot.

Bending the springs always works, its what ive done for over 10 years, never touch the screws
well i've had discs on my main bike for the lst 5, but still work on them all the same
built a bike today as it happens - mid 90's GT as a singlespeed hack bike until i get my fixie sorted. Had to persuade the 2.3 tyres to fit into the frame. Fecking Kona wheels on it are dished really badly from the factory so had to redish the back to get the tyres to fit

Bit random but:
Have you ever herd of an diamond jump comp? Its A MTB I had ages ago (before it was nicked :/ ) It had a really nice Rockshock Judy forks on, alex dx32 rims, diore gears, hydro disc brakes. (came with a cable front disc and v brake on the rear standard.) It was graphite grey with red and white (I think) sticker.
Anyway ive been trying to find another 1 for agggeeeessss and ive never seen another one. Just wondering if youve ever herd of one.

is that a nut under teh sheet ;D nope. one of these but non electric start and straight english front axle. 1950 vintage, 22hp, flat out at about 19mph never heard of of that bike before ryan. www.vorb.org.nz/vorb-download-7763.jpg&sid=a2c4ea4d0b5a692f1ae221b223a8a238found this on a quick google, a diamondBACK jump comp. nice looking thing . I quite fancy a da bomb xlr8r frame and was going to get one before my fire-eye, but prefer cro-mo. now they're £120 on www.chainreactioncycles.com/! my fire-eye is now £200 frame only, maybe in the new-year ;D chainreaction is soo cheap and free post makes them mostly cheaper than ebay
