Hey all, Recently my bikes decided it wants to fall into various bits whilst moving, this has caused me to slide across a roundabout, and generally endanger myself and road users.
I'm now scared.
Can anyone advice cheap-ish bikes, preferably jump bikes, with disk brakes?
Need a new one urgently, that urgent I'm buying off the mrs' parents...
any help appreciated! Ben

We're talking about mountain bikes here right? How much have you got to spend and what are you going to use the bike for? Why are disc brakes a priority. At the lower end of the market the disc braked bikes are more likely to be a lesser quality IMO, a full suspension bike with disc brakes can be had for about £100 these days...but it won't last long. If it was for commuting/jumping and generally having fun then I'd be going for something like this: V brakes are powerful enough, you don't need suspension and gears only break! This one's less than £150 from Winstanley'sps. I'm a bit old school, so my info isn't exactly cutting edge - I'll bow down to superior knowledge of other members if they know better, but unless you're a regular downhiller or do MASSIVE jumps then a simple rigid bike with V brakes is all you need. Hardcore, simple and budget friendly.

I assume were talking pedal bikes here?
Second hand forums are best. southerndownhill.com should be top marks...

What they said, its a good time to shop around too with 2008 bikes coming. buy the best you can afford, a good known brand, and as RMAD poined out, ignore gimmicks like suspension and disc brakes if under £300. have a good read of some mags like what MTB, some good deals on ebay and in shops. a good rummage and watching of many many auctions will uncover a bargain,,,

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

ive got £300. thats it, i want the best i can get tbh. Preferably new because they come warrentied, and I'm good at braking bikes. not bothered about suspension, but prefer disks cause i know my way around them and am shocking at v-brakes. thanks for the links and that, all checked and now being searched through.

Do some eBay-fu and search for Hope hydraulic discs. Two pot callipers with a lever and rotor don't go for too much. But change the pads as a matter of course. V brakes aren't that great. They also rely on regularly lubed cables and I found the spring arms failed after about nine months on my slalom mtb. It only means bending them back but eventually the whole arm assemblies need replacing. Stuff falling off is usually down to lack of maintenance. So I would keep everything as simple as possible - single speed, fully rigid, pair of discs, a gusseted or boxed tube frame and three-piece BMX-style cranks. Phone www.chainreactioncycles.com, choose your parts and they'll build it for you. It's the cheapest place I've come across for bike stuff.

I have a Specialized Hardrock Pro Sport Disc that's kept me going for the past couple of years. Cable discs (not great but better than v-brakes), hard-tail, half decent frame etc, about £450 worth all in.
