Behold my new (old) calculator!
The story behind this - at work I quite often use a calculator, mine being a cack bulk-order Busicom thing.
Earlier in the week, someone at work had lost their calculator so someone in the background was digging through the supplies box for them and went "Ergh, don't think you want this one, I'll bin it" which made me go over to investigate as I hate seeing anything thrown away. There was this very calculator, though dirty and dusty, still had its original leather carrying pouch and box (!). However, what I really liked was how slimline it was, plus the brushed-steel surround.
At that point I said "I'll have it" and gave my modern calculator away in exchange. Whilst cleaning it up, I noticed it had a sticker on the back saying "JUL 1983" plus the fact that it was made in Japan, making it 80s J-tin! I turned it on and it worked fine, though could probably do with a new battery (no solar panels here!). It has now become my new calculator of choice.
Amazing what a throwaway society we live in - I've rescued all sorts of equipment for my own use at work just because it is old, dirty or broken. I tend to keep WD40 and a few screwdrivers in my desk for these office tat "rescue missions".
Next week, because of a pending office move, people are being instructed to put all electrical items they no longer require into a room to be picked up for disposal. Going to have a rummage through and see what I can turn up. Anyone else here like that?
